Megaton: THQ Announces Crytek As Homefront Sequel Developer (Update)

Update: Crytek’s told Eurogamer next Homefront game will be made by Nottingham-based developer Crytek UK and will “benefit from the latest CryEngine technology”.

The developer, once known as Free Radical, created the multiplayer portion of Crysis 2, and is responsible for Timesplitters, Second Sight and Haze.

A total oddball, but one that will surely strike some energy into the Honmefront franchise. Yes, THQ’s announced that Crytek will develop Homefront 2.

The game will see a release in THQ’s Q4, meaning anywhere between April 2013 and March 2014. It’ll come available for “consoles” and PC, and by the look of things, it’ll be on next generation systems.

No confirmation yet, but the talk on twitter is that Crytek UK will be at the helm.

“Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent,” said said THQ’s Danny Bilson, executive vice president, core games.

“Homefront’s unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek’s industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand.”

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ,” Crytek boss Cevat Yerli added.

“We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title, creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game. It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way.”

Kaos Studios, the developer behind the first game was shut down by THQ as the game, although heavily marketed, only managed sales of 1.5 million, with 2.4 million units shipped.
