Sony’s had great relationships with third party developers ranging from PSone days, all the way to this current generation. But things have changed overtime, with the arrival of Microsoft into the mix, competition has become stiff – especially with the Xbox 360 leading install base between the two at the moment. So the question was posed to Scott McCarthy, senior brand manager for Sony’s MLB: The Show, whether Sony was still pursuing exclusives from third party developers. McCarthy’s answer was rather clever.
“We work very closely with our 3rd parties publishers, not necessarily to lock down games exclusively, but to lock up exclusive parts of games. A good example is Batman: Arkham Asylum, where you could only play as the Joker on PlayStation 3.
When you make a title exclusive, you limit its promotional power; we don’t want to do that. We want games to be as big as possible – it’s great for the industry.”
He continued, adding: However, we want to make sure that you play it on the best system possible, so we like to take parts of games and make them exclusive to the PlayStation system.”
Sony’s first party offerings this year is unmatched. In fact, it might be the best exclusive games lineup of any generation, with over 20 games coming to the PS3 and no other system.
Thanks, ScrawlFX.
