For Capcom, New IPs Will Be Forged In Japan

Capcom has been looking at the performance of some of its titles developed in the west and the results are not attractive. Titles such as Dark Void from Airtight, and Bionic Commando from GRIN did not live up to expectations in the sales department. In response to the abysmal performances, the publisher will now develop all new IPs in Japan. This according to Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimota.

“As a group, the new titles where development was led from abroad didn’t do so well,” he told FT.

Despite the drastic move, Western studios are working on major sequels like Dead Rising 2, which is being developed by Canada’s Blue Castle Games.

The boss also said he’s “interested” in the Nintendo 3DS but has yet to see how the thing works for sure. And as for Sony’s Move and Microsoft’s Project Natal, he said both companies need to show their business model as to how they’ll launch their motion devices this fall.

“If there isn’t a strong business model message from the platform holders about how they will develop [motion controllers] with users, then I don’t think it will go well.”
