On December 17th, 2009, Final Fantasy XIII went on sale in Japan exclusively for the PS3. It’s nearing the two million sold mark, in fact the entire stock was sold out in the first week, putting the 13th title not too far off its predecessors sales achievement. There’s no doubt the game will perform magnificently in the west when it’s on store shelves in two weeks time, but will gamers who purchase the Xbox 360 version be getting the lesser of two?
We’ve just found out that the Japanese PS3 version doubles the amount of content on the Xbox 360’s.
Recently, Ve3tro reported the Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 install sizes for the three discs it comes on. Disc one weighed in at 5.0GB, disc two 5.8 and the last 6.6GB. That’s a grand total of 18.3 GB. When compared to the Japanese PS3 version, which packs a total of 39.4GB on on Blu-ray, (according to Digital Foundry), it’s merely half the size. What are the reasons? There’s no need to worry.
The size difference should not frighten Xbox 360 owners, the game has a great amount of CGI cutscenes, in fact the Japanese version of the game gives a mammoth 32.6GB of CGI, living only 6.8GB for actual gameplay. So if anything, the difference between the space utilized on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions can be explained by more aggressive compression in the CGI on the Xbox 360.
Still, it’s a huge difference in space and our hats a tipped in Square-Enix’s direction for pulling it off successfully.

Meh, I’m getting the PS3 version anyway. No worries here.
Interesting. That’s alot of compression. Makes me think there’s more to it tho…
