Amazon Reveals Fire TV Set-Top Box Which Doubles As A Games Console

It’s out today in the U.S. for $99. You can add a controller for $39.99. Details inside.

Amazon has finally announced Amazon Fire TV, an Android-based $99 set-top box designed to play games and stream movies, TV shows and music.

Available from today in the US, the device promises to offer “high-performance gaming”, integrating a Qualcomm Quad Core Snapdragon Krait 300 processor, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM.

The announcement follows months of speculation that Amazon was to enter the games market after leaked images of its controller appeared online and acquiring Killer Instinct developer Double Helix last month.

Games confirmed for Fire TV include an exclusive version of Minecraft, as well as racer Asphalt 8 and 2K’s sports title NBA 2K14. EA, Disney, Ubisoft, 2K and more are all said to have support for the device.

A wireless controller is also available to purchase separately for $39.99, and while some games will be playable using the supplied remote, Amazon says you can “double the number of games you can play” by picking it up.

Sev Zero, a fast-paced tower defense game exclusive to Fire TV is also included with the controller free of charge.

A UK price and release date for Amazon Fire TV has yet to be announced.
