EA’s been talking up a new Battlefield experience all week. This is it. The game’s called Battlefield Play4Free, a brand new PC series that will allow you to do exactly what the title states, which is, obviously, play for free.
The game will make money via micro-transactions, and is “a deep PC shooter featuring signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay and intense 32-player online battles.”
Here’s senior producer, James Salt:
“We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6M registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for,” he said.
“Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium — but free — experience that rivals top console titles.”
The new Play4Free game will be a unique combination of Battlefield 2 and Bad Company 2, with the “most popular maps” of BF2 and “the familiar classes and powerful weapons” of BFBC2.
It’ll also link between three titles: itself, Battlefield: Heroes, and the upcoming Battlefield 3.

The release trailer’s not one for the history books, but one that’s good, and will sell nonetheless.
