So I’ve been literally begging for an Onimusha game, but never would I have thought that there were internal discussions about reviving the franchise, it and Dino Crysis at Capcom. I’m not getting my hopes up too high here, but if another Onimusha game’s ever made, I’ll be the happiest man of earth.
Yeah, I’m that big of a fan.
Speaking to IGN, Capcom VP of Strategic Planning and Business Development Christian Svennson said that the franchises are not dead; Capcom’s just trying to figure out how to bring them back for “modern day gamers.”
“Onimusha is tricky in particular given how Japanese-focused the franchise has been,” he said. “When you look at the timing and sales trend of how Onimusha has gone each outing – I won’t give you the exact numbers, but let’s just say every outing subsequently has been about 60% of the prior – the brand doesn’t right now have quite the resilience that you might think.”
According to Svennson, there might be an Onimusha announcement coming soon, as the name’s been in heavy circulation around Capcom recently. As for Dino Crisis, it’s been mentioned a few times, but no one has figured out a good way to bring it back.
“Dino Crisis 3 I think is where it went off the rails if I recall. Dino Crisis’ success really was an out cropping of Resident Evil 1 and 2. There are discussions, Dino Crisis comes up from time to time, but there isn’t any burning desire from R&D or the business side to light that franchise back up again. Until there’s an internal champion with something incredible, things just sort of sit there.”
I’m more hopeful about Onimusha seeing the light of day than I am Dino Crisis. The latter I’m not too worried about, but the former? Well, let me be plain: it’s one of my most beloved franchises of all time.

the first two onimushas were definitely the best. 3 and dawn of dreams were okay. things i didnt like about 3 was the fact that the game was set in france, the fact that we were going in back and forward in time what was the point in that, and the fact that they changed Samanosuke’s voice actor that really pissed me off. dawn of dreams on the other felt too much like an action rpg rather than a hack n slash game, and also didn’t like the how they split the game up into missions like devil may cry, oh and yet again they changed Samanosuke’s (Tenkai’s) voice actor.
also a new onimusha would definitely be heaven on a game disc, just as long a they don’t pull another DmC. other than that if a new onimusha came out id probably crap myself, im also a big fan of the series, its my favorite series from capcom period.
Wow, we’re in the same boat then. Onimusha 2 was the best in series. That’s the one with Jubei? Ah! Loved that game! Still have it sitting there. Might just crank it up!
dont bother crapcom!
you already destroyed DMC and resident evil, is that not enough?
“Onimusha is tricky in particular given how Japanese-focused the franchise has been,â€
why is that tricky?
*bangs head against keyboard*
you know THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOUR FANS WANT, RIGHT!!!!!!!?????????
crapcom STILL dont get it!
we dont want series we know and love changed from traditional Japanese games, to western games.
ahhhhh, why do you think people hated DMC4 or RE5?
are these guys dumb or what?
why do you have to westernize the games?
why cant you release the games the same way they were 10 years ago, that is what the fans love is it not?
this is exactly what is destroying crapcom and $E, they have this stupid thing in there mind that every game they release has to be westernized, they cant make any traditional Japanese games.
whats the point of being a asian developer if your going to make western games?
we all know how that turns out, its called quantum theory!
WOW. Comment of the year. I agree completely.
LOL, thanks!
gets so frustrating seeing your favorite series get destroyed like this!
I know, I think I’m the biggest Onimusha fan ever. Especially 2 with Jubei. AH!
@Ernice Gilbert, no sir im the biggest onimusha fan ever. Samanosuke will always be better than jubei, but onimusha 2 is a better game.
Ghost, let’s try this again: I AM the BIGGEST Onimusha fan existing : )
