For Sony, A PSPgo Re-Launch Might Be The Best Option

PSPgo was the worst kept secret in all of gaming history, and now that it’s on store shelves around the globe, people are not responding by spending their hard earned cash to buy the thing. So what’s the problem? Well I don’t know. For one thing it’s just too expensive. I mean it’s light weight, cute, got cool games you know, it’s not a bad piece of hardware but a tad too pricey.

Sony knows that and the giant is planning an all-out advertising blitz. Yes folks the PSPgo might just be getting a relaunch.

According to this report from Gamervision, Sony plans to relaunch the PSPgo. “Marketing Blitz” are the exact words Gamervision used, speculating that the device might even recieve a price cut.

And that would be the right move imo; $199 maybe. What’s your take? Share your thoughts.

I agree with the article’s view that the Kevin Butler ads have been accepted very well and I believe they could only help the PSPgo at this point considering its hit rock bottom and is due for an “Intervention.” I think a price cut has to happen for the blitz to seriously work. If they were to come out with UMD support/transfer, that would also be very nice. All the PSPgo did for me, was push me closer to buying a PSP 3000. It will be interesting to see the “blitz” they draw up. Keep us posted GT!

I don’t think a re-launch is needed, as much as dropping the system altogether.

Looking at sales for it in Japan each week, I think shows the problems it will have with consumers.

I don’t think consumers are accepting 100% downloadable games right now, and that’s what the PSPgo is offering.

If they’re serious, I think they need to drop it below $200, down to around $150, if they want more market penetration.

Um, you have some good points Coffee, but dropping the system altogether would not be a good move either – just make the deal sweeter..

Like it or not, we’re moving towards a “download” only era and I view Sony as leading the way with PSPgo, however acceptance from the masses is still difficult but overtime folks will warm-up to it.

    Eventually, things will break loose.

I’d have to agree with Ernice there, download only, although I can’t stand it will be the norm in 5 years!

Downloads are a normal thing, but I see it mainly being with smaller games.
Games that can be found on the PSN, WiiWare/Virtual Console, or Xbox Live Arcade.

Apple has done well with the iPod Touch and iPhone with downloadable content. Sony is trying it with the PSPgo, and Nintendo is doing it with the DSi now.

I don’t think it’s going away. I think the PSPgo’s problem is two fold:
    1) The PSP 3000
    2) Price

I agree with Ernice on this one they definetly can not drop it they have spent way too much money into production and research with it and need to make their profit on it before they move on. Now download only is going to be the wave of the future and it sucks but that is the way of the world and we can’t stop it no matter how hard we try because these companies are focused on it and they make the rules unfortunately. And Kevin Butler doing the PSPGo ads would definetly bring up sales personally I love the sense of humor the Kevin Butler ads use and the way he delivers his lines crack me up so this is a really good idead for the PSPGo and they are probably already editing some commercials to run as we speak. Personally I can not afford a PSPGo so I will probably not be buying one in the near future but I’d hate to see Sony fail on this hardware it has too much potential.
