Wow! 5 Reasons You Absolutely Must Buy Heavy Rain

by Ernice Gilbert on February 5th, 2010, under Editorials

Once in every generation, a game is created that revolutionizes how we play forever. Think Metal Gear Solid in PS1 days, Grand Theft Auto for PS2, Halo for the Xbox and so on.

Now we’re well into the seventh generation of gaming and although we’ve had genre defining experience like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and the recently released Mass Effect 2, no game has been able to do what Metal Gear did when it was originally released with its tactical action gameplay or Halo when it revolutionized the FPS genre and changed mulitiplayer forever. No game has yet to do none of the aforementioned; no none.

That will all be history when Heavy Rain lands in February because without a shadow of a doubt, it’ll not only change the way we experience games, it’ll create a new genre all together; and here are 5 reasons why you must buy this game when it arrives:

- Genre Creating

There is no one way to label Heavy Rain, you must think of every move, every decision that’s made. Every choice leads to a different path and if for one reason or another the character you chose died, the game won’t end, just like life don’t simple allow you to restart.

Your mission would continue with another character and the game continues. Yes it’s that unique and compelling. David Cage once told Game Informer that “Heavy Rain is NOT an adventure game. There is no inventory in the game, no object to combine or examine, no puzzle, the game does not rely on everlasting dialogues,” he said.

“The story is told through players’ actions and not through cutscenes, and players’ actions have significant consequences on the narrative. Last but not least, Heavy Rain offers a diversity of situations and gameplay, as well as some spectacular action sequences.”

Indeed, a new genre must be created in order for Heavy Rain to be done justice.

- Great Replay Value

The amount of replay value that’s to be had in Quantic Dreams masterpiece is nothing like we’ve seen before. Not only will any of the four characters give you different versions of the game, the choices they make will also lead to varying endings; which in turn leads to a never-ending cycle of replay fun.

You’ll be talking to your friends about how the game ended, and every single one of you will have a different story to tell, now if that’s now simply incredible, I don’t know what is.

- First of its Kind

Yes it is the first of its kind for many reasons already mentioned. Genre creating, massive replay value and no other game even comes close to doing what David Cage and his team did. It’s better than many motion pictures, well written and the narration is superb.

- Unbeatable Graphics

Have you seen what we’ve seen? Tell me, is there any other title on the market right now that beats Heavy Rain’s visuals? I say no boldly. Uncharted 2 gives it competition but we believe the title that’ll really put up a stiff battle will be God of War III, other than that, Heavy Rain is the best you’ll see on any platform.

- Help Quantic Dream and Sony

You know why? The two firms have taken a risk that others we hesitant to take for years. 20 million dollars from Sony, which the giant calls the “Heavy Rain gamble”. Not many companies would risk so much cash and invest it in a game that might “fail” at retail. Yet Sony and Quantic did all in an effort to take this industry to new heights.

Will they succeed? That’s up to you; you must save up on cash, sacrifice some things because when the game’s made available on February 23rd in the US and on the 26th in EU, you must buy Heavy Rain if there’s going to be any chance of experience something like it ever again.

There’s nothing quite like it.

I wonder how they’re going to advertise this game. I’m glad to see Sony allowing a developer to try new things. I will say though, right now I can’t afford it.

I haven’t purchased a game since December, and that game is still wrapped up in the case, not opened.

Seems you’ve been a very busy man. But I do hope they advertise the thing..

It should have already begun in earnest.

Heavy Rain is going to be historical when we look back on this gen I agree with all your points Ernice Sony took a big gamble on this and now gamers need to do their part in buying the game and getting the word out. I haven’t seen one ad for Heavy Rain and that worrys me but if you look at how Sonys server crashed today from people trying to get the demo I think we are dealing with a lot of people who have been following this game and are hardcore gamers but to cross the threshold into casual gamers they need to start advertising like crazy right now they need to look at Mass Effect 2 I saw an ad every 10 mins for three weeks leading up to it and Heavy Rain deserves the same ad revenue.

It’s kind of funny you mentioned that about Mass Effect 2. I had a friend that told me he saw a commercial for it, he couldn’t recall the game’s name though(until I mentioned it).
I think he saw the commercial during the Saints vs. Vikings game, and he said it was like a watching a movie or something.

I don’t think he actually liked it though, as I think he thought it was annoying…I’ll have to ask him about that again!

Yeah, Sony had better put some ad $s behind this game, I mean why risk $20 million on it and then abandon the most important part: Marketing!

Hec, I feel like writing an article about it!
