I’m assuming everyone knows this, but for the person out there who might not have a clue we need to say it: 3D technology has been around from since the 1050s but for some reason in late 2009 and now in 2010, its popularity has resurrected, making a big comeback and backed by three entertainment giants.
It probably has something to do with the worldwide success of James Cameron’s Avatar and now, studios like Ubisoft has positioned itself with its 3D compatible Avatar-based game. Is 3D really coming?
On June 11th, 2010, sports fans around the world will be able to experience their favorite pass-time all while wearing strange looking glasses. ESPN is launching ESPN 3D and will broadcast about 85 live sporting events in 3D, some of which include: the first match of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Soccer
Tournament, the game will be between Africa and Mexico, BSC National Championship, the summer X Games, 25 other world cup matches and the BSC National Championship.
The down side to all this is that you must have a 3D compatible television to experience the magic coupled with a peer of 3D glasses and sometimes (rarely) special set-top boxes.
Although all the aforementioned are significant, it’s the announcement that Discovery, Sony and IMAX have joined forces (partnered) to deliver the U.S.’s first 24/7 3D television network. Sony has announced that it’ll be releasing a 3D compatible line of Bravia TVs and plans to incorporate 3D technology into its PlayStation 3 console and Blu-ray disc format.
Nothing is certain, but by the look of things, 3D 2010 in is jumping out at us.
I dont think it will catch on honestly. at least not at first, im sure the prices for even the lower tier televisions are just going to be ridiculous in price at launch. but who knows maybe this will truly be the future of television.
