Just because The Last of Us has been wildly successful, that doesn’t mean Naughty Dog is about to change the Uncharted franchise into a dark universe to mimic Joel and Ellie’s adventure. In fact, according to the developer’s co-president Evan Wells, Nathan Drake, along with his cohorts, will continue to be a lighthearted romp.

It was in a recent interview with Eurogamer that Wells made this known, however he was sure to note that from a technical standpoint, they learnt a lot from The Last of Us that will be added to the Uncharted franchise to its benefit.

“Uncharted is a completely different franchise, and appeals to its audience for completely different reasons. I don’t think The Last of Us marks a new direction in tone that all of our future games are going to take on. We’d alienate a lot of our Uncharted fans. We want to keep it a light-hearted romp. I think from a technical standpoint we’ve learnt some things from the Last of Us that will feed into Uncharted – in fact it strengthens our desire to keep them distinct.”

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will be released holiday season 2015.

Uncharted 4 is something to behold. Writing this piece, I’m still trying to process how in the world can a game look so darn good. But Naughty Dog are at the top of their game, and not only will Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End be rendered in 1080p glory, Naughty Dog is also targeting 60fps.

That’s according to the developer, in a post on the U.S. PS Blog, making known that the new game is also being developed on their brand new PS4 engine:

That’s Nathan Drake rendered in full 1080p glory, using the power of our PS4 engine. All footage you see in the trailer was captured completely in engine. We’re targeting 60fps for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and as you can see, the visual fidelity for our character models will reach new heights. In fact, thanks to the power of PS4, right now Drake’s Uncharted 4 model is over double the polygons of Joel from The Last of Us PS3.

The next generation of Nathan Drake is going to be very real and will explore what it means when Drake is forced back into the world of thieves. He will embark on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. It’s his greatest adventure yet and will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.

The game is now available for preorder, and will be released holiday season 2015.

The big takeaway from the changes happening at Naughty Dog is that the studio is doing some serious restructuring — most of which, in my observation, is centered in making their upcoming game, Uncharted 4, the best it could be.

And with that in mind, news surfaced today revealing that Todd Stashwick, the person who voiced the Uncharted 4 trailer posted below, will no longer be the voice moving forward. “They chose to recast my role,” he told IGN.

Elsewhere, The Last of Us’ art director Nate Wells also left Naughty to join GiantSparrow. Unsettling developments, yes. Let’s just hope that when it’s all said and done that the Uncharted game Naughty Dog produces will outdo our expectations.

Naughty Dog is now a two-game developing studio, The Last of Us and Uncharted IPs. Of the latter, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was the last title to grace PS3, but we never doubted for once that Naughty Dog would continue the bestselling franchise on PS4.

But we hadn’t heard anything about the game until today, when Lost and The Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan spilled the beans while speaking today at a conference regarding his work on the live-action series for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

According to Monaghan, he simply can’t wait for the next Naughty Dog epic, hinting that he knows a thing or two about it.

“I’ll always stay focused on the gaming world and see what’s coming up,” he said. “The new Uncharted I’m really excited to see how that’s going to be and obviously both new gaming systems.”

Of course we knew that Sony held back some major announcements from its E3 presser because PS4 was being unveiled, and no one wants to debut their big game in the shadows of a next generation console.

GamesCom, maybe? Let’s hope so, but it’s good to finally get semi-confirmation that Naughty Dog is hard at work on one of the best franchises ever forged.

Naughty Dog has a thing for putting clues of their upcoming games in ones they’ve already released. It happened for The Last of Us, when clues were stealthily inserted in Uncharted 3′s opening bar stage. Now it seems like Naughty Dog’s up to its old tricks, as it’s once more placed clues of an unannounced title in The Last of Us.

Spotted by 4News, Naughty Dog included a calenda in what appears to be an abandoned house in The Last of Us, showing the month of October, 2013. This is no doubt a clue to something incoming, most likely a game, and even more likely, the next installment in the bestselling Uncharted franchise.

We haven’t heard a word from Naughty Dog concerning what it’s been working on for PlayStation 4, and only those who have no clue about how the industry works would think that one of Sony’s top developers would not be working on at least one game for the upcoming console, to be released in October/November 2013.

Every video games console needs a hero, and sometimes they need more than one. Xbox has Halo, Nintendo’s Wii U has Mario. Today, Sony will announce PlayStation 4 in New York, what are the top five games that’ll lead the new console to victory? Let’s find out.

Uncharted

If there has been one PlayStation franchise that’s made PS3 a viable buy, and there have been many, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted must be counted atop the bunch. The franchise has sold over 14 million units on PS3 alone, making it the most successful exclusive Sony’s seen in the seventh generation of gaming. The game has also helped move millions of PS3s, while helping the console find its identity.

Uncharted 4: Drake’s New Beginning should be a PlayStation 4 launch title.

Metal Gear Solid 5

When PS3 was being lambasted by journalists in its early 2006-2007 years for being too expensive and not having enough games to support a purchase, there was only one game Sony could turn to: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots. The game was, at that time, Sony’s killer punch, a secret weapon of sorts to calm the building storm, and that’s exactly what it did.

MGS4: Guns Of The Patriots sold almost 6 million units in lifetime sales, helping Sony move over 200,000 consoles immediately upon its release, and thousands more thereafter. If you’re going to release PS4, then Metal Gear Solid 5 must be an exclusive on said console, just like its predecessors before.

Killzone 4

Every console needs a strong shooter. Xbox 360 has Halo, so will Xbox 720. PS4 needs Killzone 4 – even as a launch title.

Killzone 3 was, and still is the best looking game on consoles although it was released way before Battlefield 3 and many other top shooters. If Sony hopes to wow crowds at E3 next year, the firm should have Killzone 4 running, and ready for release alongside PS4.

Although the last installment was received differently by varying fans, it sold 2.2 million units life-to-date, a number I believe could rise substantially if Guerrilla Games stuns us at E3 2013 with KZ4, and if it’s released as a launch title – Killzone 2 sold almost 3 million.

Gran Turismo 6

There is no doubt in my mind that Polyphony Digital is already laboring away on Gran Turismo 6 for PlayStation 4, and why wouldn’t they? Gran Turismo 5′s demo (Gran Turismo 5: Prologue), sold a stunning 4.10 million units. Did you get that? A demo sells more units than top shooter Killzone 3, Sucker Punch’s inFamous 1 and 2, Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet 2, and the same amount as God of War 3? The game itself has sold almost 8 million copies life-to-date, more than any other PS3 exclusive, ever. It was also a system-seller for Sony. Just imagine what GT6 will accomplish once released on PlayStation 4.

LittleBigPlanet 3

Every console needs a family game because parents are the ones with the money. Why do you think Kinect sold 18 million units in two years? Or do you think guys were the ones purchasing Wii Fit causing it to sell over 22 million units worldwide? No, mothers were the ones purchasing the game, and Sony knows it needs a family title to answer this problem. It already has one.

LittleBigPlanet is one of those games where everyone can pick up a controller and have at it. It’s fun, silly, rewarding, makes people laugh and can bring the whole family together to play. The game’s also sold a respectable 5 million units life-to-date, while the second title sold 2.5 million. Not bad for a new IP showing up to the game rather late.

There are other titles we believe will help PlayStation 4 but are not necessarily needed and we’ll talk about them in another thread. But these are the titles Sony’s next console, codenamed Orbis, simply can’t do without.

The day has arrived. Today, in New York City, Sony will announce the PlayStation 4. We’ve got the exact times it’ll be happening for the Eastern and Pacific folks, and GMT. It all boils down to this, then. Your thirst ready to be quenched below the break.

Video Thirst: PlayStation Meeting 2013 – New York City - Hammerstein Ballroom

Live stream by Ustream

We’ll also be bringing relentless news as it happens, and once videos, trailers and anything PlayStation-related news is made known, you’ll be able to quench it all here.

We won’t interrupt the video, of course, but open a few other browsers to check out the posts as they happen. As you may know, PlayStation 4′s controller was leaked on gaming’s web recently, and the feeling I get, while traversing the internet, is that although many are not thrilled about it, there’s not this massive negative sentiment towards the controller. In fact, I find many like it.

Long lines as people gather for Sony’s PlayStation Meeting In New York City

Times:

For US gamers, PlayStation Meeting becomes a thing at 3 p.m Pacific Standard Time (PST) and 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).

For EU/UK Gamers, the event goes heavy from 11pm GMT.

What to Expect

Expect Sony to make a few PS3 and PS Vita-related announcements. The latter might get a rumored redesign, and even a price cut at the event.

Sony will also talk about PS3 and the exclusive games coming to it, like God of War: Ascension and The Last Of Us, the latter releasing in June.

And then, the event’s expected to go mental with the PlayStation 4′s announcement, and the games coming to it. We should hear about specs, see games like Killzone 4, new IPs and even Uncharted 4, so all-in-all, New York City should be ablaze Wednesday evening.

The Importance Of The Meeting

Make no mistake, Wednesday’s PlayStation Meeting will be Sony’s most important event in a long time, and it was a smart move to step away from the noise of E3 and host a PlayStation-only occasion, where all the focus will be on one brand. It’s a strategy Apple has used successfully over the years to usher in their new products.

Sony, like it or not, is not at a good place. They firm was once one of the most powerful companies in the world, and although the brand remains strong, a rising yen and competition from fellow orient companies Samsung and LG, has left the giant reeling to find its path.

PlayStation 3, because of the firm’s arrogance, saw a launch disaster, causing the brand to take a tremendous hit, losing much of its ground to Xbox 360, a console that wouldn’t have stood a chance had Sony played humble, release PS3 at a decent starting price, and not launch one year later.

That’s not happening this time around. Sony’s looking to go first, and from what I’ve heard, Kaz Hirai and his gang have learnt many lessons.

PlayStation, believe it or not, must prove to be the great brand it is all over again, and it must put a stop to Microsoft’s prolific rise.

This is quintessentially a once in a lifetime opportunity. It cannot be wasted, and that cannot be overstated.

We’re ready.

It was some of his tweets that sent the internet a bit wild yesterday, when he said:

For Gamers…Just back from 1st day on a new project. Very hush-hush, but I think it’s going to be rather good…..

Sony won’t name the next PlayStation “PS4″, a new rumor claims, instead the new machine will be called ‘PlayStation Omni’ and will be released in September 2013, way before Microsoft launches Xbox Durango. Details below the break.

This rumor comes to us via Dual Pixels, citing an anonymous source who’d already leaked two pieces of news to the site, the first being about a Castlevania sequel, the other a reveal of Kingdom Hearts HD Collection. Both rumors, Dual Pixels claim, came to pass courtesy Geno, a Nostradamus in disguise.

But the details of the rumor are quite possible and extremely exciting. I’ll allow ‘Geno’ to speak for himself, here. Read the full quote below:

Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autostereoscopic display that can track the users head and present a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen.

One application from an entertainment perspective is seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. The tech can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Duo-Moves or the Classic DuoShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399, and one with the Omniviewer bundled with a game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.

Omni is also part of their philosophy with the new OmniCloud, the new version of Gakai. This service will not only cloud stream PS1, PS2 and select PS3 games to Playstation Certified devices, but will also allow every digital and retail purchase to have access to a copy on the cloud. Basically, you buy one game, you can use it on any Plyastation device. Direct hardware Backwards Compatibility will be available by a $70 – $99 dongle that is plugged into the Omni that contains a PS3 on a chip with Cell to run games.

Known first party games in development for Playstation Omni are: Next Gen Uncharted, Next Gen Siren, The Boydguard, Wipeout Omni, Bump In the Night, Killzone 4, Gran Turismo Prologue, Next Gen Media Molecule, Omni Fitness.

Again, folks, keep in mind these details are all rumors, but it could all be true – we actually hope it is! And it truly sounds exciting. Fingers crossed, then.

Naughty Dog used 30,000 poly character models for Uncharted 2 on PS3. On PS4, however, the venerable firm’s working on a game that requires 1 million poly character models. Did you get that? One million… I am official ready for PS4.

PSLS discovered a Naughty Dog job listing for a Character Artist which states: Prior professional experience with normal map extraction of human models for next-gen games.

The same listing also says that “this digital sculptor will be responsible for making million poly models game ready, and support highest-res characters for renderings”, and since the job opening is for a character artist, it’s more than likely the million polygon models refers to character models.

If this is true, I don’t have words to explain how amazing PS4 games will look. Remember God of War III? Well, said game used just 20,000 polygons, and again, Uncharted 2 used 30,000…

Another aspect which must be considered is the game they’re crafting for PS4 – is it Uncharted 4? It certainly isn’t The Last Of Us, as said game might be released this year, and early next for the latest – especially since Naughty Dog’s been working on it for the past two years.

It must be Uncharted 4….Drake’s Love Story..

Okay, the love story part is silly but my goodness! 1 million polygon models?

Find the full job opening piece Naughty Dog website’s careers page.

A new job listing posted on linkedIn revealing that Naughty Dog’s working on a new project, one that requires workers who are skilled at “producing engaging and fun third-person action gameplay and levels.”

The listing refers to “planning, level layout, setup and tuning of single-player levels, from high concept to object placement and scripting”, all of which are a part of the Uncharted design.

Uncharted games take about 2yrs to develop, so it’s not surprising that a new game is already underway. But could it be something else? Could it be a new Jak & Daxter, while Naughty Dog work on Uncharted 4 for PS4? That’s my guess at least.

Share your thoughts.

Thanks, IGN.

“There are a ton of Drake adventures out there and we haven’t told all of them yet, and as long as fans want the games and as long as we find something that’s interesting and will push the medium forward, we’ll continue to make them.”

Aren’t you going to ask?

Yesterday Nolan North who plays Nathan Drake’s character in the Uncharted franchise, said many people ask him why isn’t the game on Xbox 360, because it if it were, the game would sell “25 million” copies.

He said that’s because PS3 is the only machine with the power to accomplish what it takes to make an Uncharted game. So since Xbox 720 and PS4 will probably boast about the same ability, should Uncharted 4 and go multiplatform?

I suspect I already know your answer, but let’s talk! Do it here: The official Gamesthirst talk zone.
