As the service turns 4 years old, Sony wanted to offer more (I suspect it’s also because Microsoft has unabashedly stolen Sony’s PS4 model with Games with Gold for Xbox One), and so the firm will offer two games per month for PS3, PS Vita, and of course PS4.

And now, June’s offerings:

Trine 2: Complete Story (my PS4 review here) is a puzzle platformer set in a gorgeous fantasy world, where you’ll switch between heroes (a thief, warrior and mage) to complete your journey. Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate merges the campaigns of Pixlejunk Shooter 1 and 2 and wraps them up in fancier visuals, plus some extra perks like cross-play and cross-save.

On PS3, Plus members get NBA 2K14 — just in time for the NBA finals. The latest in the franchise features a new Path to Greatness starring the reigning NBA champion LeBron James. Sly Cooper and pals are back in Thieves of Time — since it’s a cross-buy title, Plus members will get both the PS3 and Vita versions next month.

Finally, PS Vita owners get Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe. Terraria is a procedurally generated sandbox game where you’ll build crazy structures and fight insane boss monsters, while Mutant Mudds Deluxe is a spin on the traditional 2D platformers of years past – they’ve got the art style and chiptune tracks down, but you can also hop into a third dimension with a nifty jetpack. Jetpacks are cool.

That’s right, the  latest U.S. PS Store update includes a free copy of Gearbox Software’s bestselling shooter Borderlands 2, so if you’re a part of the Plus crowed, you should definitely go download the game. It’s one epic and entertaining adventure.

What will October bring for Playstation Plus subscribers? Of course, more great games. This time around, the offerings will range from exotic nightmarish open-world adventures to… medieval nightmarish open-world adventures. Throw in a great fighting game, a throwback platformer, and a unique PS Vita title, and October’s update is fantastic.

New Little King’s Story

Paul Rutshynsky, the design director of DriveClub, clarified some key things about the Playstation Plus Edition of the game.

It will include a platinum trophy, and will be upgradeable at a discount.

“There will be a discount to upgrade to the full digital edition from the PS+ edition, but prices won’t be announced for a few more weeks yet.”

He also confirmed the PS Plus Edition will be up even “well into the next year”, so there’s no rush in your decisions.

Finally, Rutshynsky also said:

“We are working on a photo mode, but that’s all I can say about it right now.”

But, unfortunately, “o Split-Screen I’m afraid.”

DriveClub will be available on Playstation 4′s launch in November 15 (US) and November 29 (EU), both in retail and as the PS Plus Edition, free for PS Plus subscribers. Your PS Plus subscription is universal between a PS3, PS4 and Ps Vita.

“Sony has already taken a major step towards a more profitable and competitive PlayStation business with a single but significant commercial decision to place online multiplayer gaming behind the PlayStation Plus subscription pay-wall.” noted the firm.

Sony made just $140 million on PS Plus last year, while Microsoft raked in $1.25 billion. This huge disparity will be completely eliminated once PSN multiplayer is only accessible through PS Plus.

Since its inception in 2002, Xbox Live has made $4.7 billion, the research firm claimed.

IHS Electronics and Media also claims that the PS4 business will be more profitable that the loss-making early days of PS3.

It said Sony’s games business was becoming more robust because of “lower research and development costs for PlayStation 4 hardware, additional revenue streams from online service subscriptions and a more aggressive transition to higher margin digital content sales”.

Microsoft clarified that a new title will be added on the 1st and 16th of every month.

Only one game will be available at a time, but once you download a title it will stay connected to your account as a past purchase, meaning it will be retrievable at a later date should you decide to delete it.

“Each specially selected, fan-favorite game will be available to download only for a limited time, so grab them before they’re gone and keep them no matter what,” noted Microsoft on its official site.

The game currently being offered for free is Fable 3, which will be removed at the end of the month when either Halo 3 or Assassin’s Creed 2 will take its place.

Gara also said that the added revenue from PS Plus would help the company recoup the great amount of money it’s now spending to get PS4 on the market, and will also help in establishing a world-class online network that is both resilient and full of social tools.

Gara added that the new PS Plus subs “applies across three consoles, includes content across all three consoles,” meaning one purchase of PlayStation Plus will give you access across platforms, including PS4, PS Vita and PS3.

PS Plus subscribers will get a free, downloadable version of Drive Club, as well as an unannounced offering and continued delivery of other well-known PS Plus favorites.

The PlayStation Network has had a rough ride, slower downloads, no cross game chatting and an infamous network hack that knocked out the entire network for months. Combine that with the smooth experience of Xbox Live and you can see why Live is the more popular online service.

However, for me there is no competition, Live is nice and everything, but I get all of the online services including playing online in games like Call of Duty and downloading games on the PlayStation 3 for free. Also if I want to go on Netflix or use a browser, that is also free, Crackle? Completely free!

To do any of those things on your Xbox 360 you need to pay for Xbox Live.

So to recap, PlayStation network can do almost anything that Live can do, maybe not as smooth, and missing a couple of things (cross game chat?) but the price is right.

If you do pay, and get into PlayStation Plus then you get free games! Not just discounts, but actual free games. This week the big one is Demons’ Souls, a fantastic title that I highly recommend.

So why isn’t there more love for Plus?

Personally I think that Microsoft is going to have to change Live substantially to stay afloat next gen, I can’t see why the service would continue to be so popular when the competition’s offering’s going toe-to-toe and charges nothing.

Yes, Bioshock 2 is now a free game on PS Plus, however the deals do not stop there. To get the full quencher, including deals on Rockstar titles, head to the US PS Blog.

In order to receive a voucher code to activate the free trial, however, you’ll need to enter your details into a Facebook competition form. Sony’s also running a competition for a full year of PS Plus for free.

Also, Sony will need your debit/credit card info to activate your free trial, which will enable the firm to automatically renew your membership for 90 days once the 30 day period is over. To avoid any unwanted charges be sure to cancel your PS Plus membership, which can be done at any time during the trial.
