PS4 and Xbox One will ship about 10 million units combined by March, 2014, according to EA in its recent earnings call, as the games publisher affirms is bullishness on the next generation of consoles and its ability to invigorate the market.

That’s according to EA’s COO Peter Moore, adding that said numbers will be reached “easily”.

“When I talked to our friends at both Sony and Microsoft, and I’m trying to get some indications in the numbers that are going to be available for sale by the end of our fiscal year on March 31 and I aggregate them, I think I can squint and see 10 million units combined, very easily,” Moore said.

“Both Sony and Microsoft are proposing that this could be their best launches ever as regards their production numbers and their ability to globalise this business quickly. So we feel bullish about our ability of having five truly next-gen titles available for that.”

EA expects the attach rate of next-gen to be three titles — meaning gamers will buy at least three games to play on their new systems, however the publisher said that it understand the market will take time to build, and doesn’t expect to see huge financial results from the onset, even if it has five next-gen launch titles available during launch window: Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Need for Speed: Rivals, NBA Live 14 and Madden NFL 25.

“We’ve guided that next-gen for fiscal ’14 is a relatively small part of our overall business,” Moore went on.

“Clearly, we’ll be putting out five next-gen titles this quarter. We’ll have a better feeling for how quick the uptake is and what the attach rate is to those. And we believe things like Battlefield will do extremely well in next-gen. But we also understand that the market’s going to take time to build. And so our forecast for full year assumes relatively low next-gen uptick of our core business.”

PS4 launches on November 15th in the U.S., its games are starting to become available as I write this. The same console will launch in Europe on November 29th. Xbox One launches on November 22nd in the U.S. and select parts of Europe.

About three more Sundays before PS4 releases in the U.S. (it comes out on November 29th in Europe), and for the remaining Weekend Quencher articles leading up to its launch, we’ll be counting down the weeks. It’s the weekend, friends, what are you guys up to?

I’ll personally be stocking up on cash in preparation for the hit my pocket will be taking on November 15th, as I won’t only be getting PS4 by itself, but with a second DualShock 4 controller, 1 year of PS Plus, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassin’s Creed IV: Blag Flag.

Yes, my pocket will be on fire on November 15th. Yet it’s a fire I’m excited to ignite as the eighth generation of consoles makes its grand entrance into the living rooms of gamers the world over, and I can’t wait!

I can’t wait to experience next-gen for myself, in the comfort of my home. I can’t wait to get online with all you guys, as we beast away in some online MP action! I can’t wait to experience the higher quality visuals made possible by new hardware, and I can’t wait to touch that black box.

What about you? What system will you be buying? Are you doing the ‘day one’ thing, or will you wait until later? Share you thoughts, and get excited! Next-gen is upon us!

Have a blessed weekend, friends.

DICE has released a new Battlefield 4 multiplayer trailer and announced the official beta dates for premium Battlelog subs, gamers who bought Medal of Honor: Warfighter, and the beta date for everyone else.

The trailer itself is unlike anything we’ve seen in a multiplayer game yet, coming with an unprecedented amount of destruction, and it includes a level of unpredictability unlike any other MP game we’ve seen. Battlefield 4 is truly looking next-gen, coming to PS4 on November 12th — three days before the console launches, and Xbox One on the 19th, which is two days before the console’s release.

Video Thirst: Next-Gen Status

I’ve seen and played many videogames, and moving towards the next-generation of consoles, not many of them provide the quality needed to be deemed next-gen — especially after experiencing The Last of Us.

Battlefield 4, on the other hand, stands a world apart from most of what we’ve seen thus far, and that says a lot.

Enough talking, then, quench your thirst now.

DICE also updated some of the official dates for the upcoming Battlefield 4 beta. Check out the details below.

Senior director of product planning and management at Xbox Albert Penello has said that Xbox One is worth more than PS4 because of Kinect and better exclusives.

Speaking to GameSpot at PAX, Penello said it was up to them to prove to gamers that what they’re getting from Xbox One is more than Sony’s PS4 can offer.

“It’s up to us to prove that it’s worth $100 more. I think it is,” he told the site.

“I think we do more. I think our games are better. I think as people start to experience Kinect and see what it can do using voice, I think that’s better,” he added. “I think the ability to have an all-in-one system where you can plug in the TV, that’s better. I think we’ll have a better online service.”

“I just believe that we’re going to have a better system.”

Apparently the $100 difference that separates PS4 and Xbox One produced a shrug from Penello, saying that: “I don’t believe it’s going to be a deal-killer.”

The man credited for creating the most popular games genre in the world, the FPS, spoke at the annual QuakeCon yesterday, and there he shared his thoughts on the next generation of gaming, namely PS4 and Xbox One.

As for how things will turn out, Carmack reckoned that next gen is “anyone’s game”, adding that “it’s exciting”.

To get things out of the way, Carmack started his keynote by giving his opinion on the difference between PS4 and Xbox One, stating that there’s not much that separates the two consoles in terms of capability.

“It’s almost amazing how close they are in capabilities,” Carmack said. “How common they are and how the capabilities they give are essentially the same. We can talk about differences in memory architectures, but the bottom line being that they’re a multi-core AMD processor with AMD graphics, is it’s almost weird how close they are.” It’s “an excellent thing for AMD.” Carmack said jokingly.

On the consoles having a great amount of RAM, Carmack, like every other developer, was happy, as ”It’s going to make things a little bit easier… There’s a ton more that we’ll do visually to the games there.”

Carmack then expressed his pleasure with Sony’s ability to regain developer goodwill after the problems it faced with PS3, namely the console’s complex cell technology.

“It’s no secret that in the previous generation I favoured the 360 over the PS3,” he reminded. “While there are certain things Sony did well for a game developer, the 360 was a nicer platform to work on… Sony has made large strides. Their development tools came out of the gate much, much better than they ever have. They’ve made some somewhat-more gamer-focused decisions in their strategies and architectures.”

On Xbox One, Carmack was still unconvinced about Kinect, complaining that it “still has some fundamental limitations with the latency and the frame rate”.

He added: “When you interact with Kinect, some of the standard interactions there like position and hold, and waiting for different things, it’s fundamentally a poor interaction. One way that I look at it is I used to give Apple a lot of grief about the one-button mouse, when anybody working with a mouse really wants… More buttons are helpful there. And Kinect is sort of like a zero-button mouse with a lot of latency on it.”

“Something like the PS Move where you’re manoeuvring around and you’ve actually got buttons on it, or something like the Sixsense Razer Hydra, where you’ve got position-tracking but also buttons to click, I think have some fundamental advantages.”

“It’s a technology that absolutely has a future, and Microsoft is pushing it hard, they’ve done a lot of excellent research with it,” he said. “But I’m still not completely convinced that that’s the cornerstone of the next gaming platform.”

As for the upheaval surrounding Xbox One, Carmack believes “the witch hunt was a little bit unjustified”, and that it’ll all subside overtime.

“One of the things that was up early before even the major issues with the used games and always-on and things like that was people being a little bit freaked out by Kinect being on all the time,” he noted.

“I am completely confident that that’s a very temporary vision about things, where if we go back 10 years the idea that everyone’s carrying around a phone that has your GPS-located position at all times would cause a lot of the tinfoil hat crowd to go absolutely crazy – the idea that, yeah, the government’s going to have backdoors into all of these, they can turn them on and track everywhere you’re going. Well, yeah, that’s pretty much the situation, but we just kind of carry on…

“It probably won’t be many years before we wind up with SKUs that just have the optical drives deleted.”

“We will just get used to it. A lot of these things are inevitable. Like, people talking about Google Glass and the issues with people carrying around having cameras recording things all the time. I think that’s going to be a net positive for society, having this sort of ground truth that’s retrievable in many cases in a lot of things. But it is, it does have social transition issues that we’re going to have to feel through as those are adopted.”

Carmack was also unbothered by the Xbox One’s game ownership policies.

“I think the witch hunt was a little bit unjustified there,” he said.

“I personally am extremely fond of having all of my digital purchases in a curated garden. All of my iTunes, all of my Amazon stuff, all of my Steam things. And it’s a positive thing. Yeah, you can have better and worse ways of doing that, but we are going to be very quickly past the age of having a game you hold in your hands on optical media.”

“It probably won’t be many years before we wind up with SKUs that just have the optical drives deleted and everybody will just be getting it through the net,” he continued. “The future is obvious right there and it will be good for us in general.”

If Amazon is any indication of things to come, PS4 will handily win the next-gen sales war – and it’s clear that the console has garnered huge portion of positive mindshare since Sony’s big E3 in June.

The top selling videogames console for the past 30 days sees Sony’s PS4 sitting in number 1, 3, 4 and 11, while the only 1 Xbox One package available is lagging behind at No. 43!

Of course these charts fluctuate, but no one can deny that PS4 has been stumping all over the competition ever since it became available for preorder.

What’s the cause of this? Many things, including the massively bad Xbox One policies, all of which Microsoft’s now abandoned, but that didn’t change how people perceive the box. Another major drawback is Xbox One’s price which, at $499, is $100 more expensive than PS4.

So according to the Amazon charts, PS4 is:

#1. With Watch Dogs
#3. With Battlefield 4
#4. With no games
#11. With Killzone

While Xbox One is:

43. with no games.

These numbers must be frightening Microsoft, and it must be part of the reason the Redmond, Washington company has been reversing on its unpopular policies.

EA’s Frank Gibeau revealed that the company is “experimenting with additional business models” for new franchises coming to Playstation 4 and Xbox One. During EA’s FY14 Q1 earning call, Gibeau said that the new models will “come out as we release new IPs and new titles over the first 24 months of the Gen4 platforms”.

Battlefield 3: Premium and FIFA Ultimate Team led to these new models, which Gibeau comments offered a “$200 million digital opportunity” throughout the publisher’s last fiscal year.

“Going forward, those alternative business models… will continue expanding, continue to grow as the online capabilities of the Gen4 machines really manifest themselves and become real,” Gibeau says. “We’ll seek to expand those opportunities across additional franchises.”

It is expected Battlefield 4 will launch with a new “Battlepack” system, which allows purchasing of gold, silver and bronze Battlepacks to unlock in-game items and XP bonuses, much like Mass Effect 3′s packages.

“We showed 22 seconds of where we’re going with it and the fan response was very positive. The DICE team is well into development on that product already, so we feel very bullish about our shooter rotation over the next several years.”

The game also “has a third-person component to it”, according to Gibeau, meaning it will probably feature both first and third-person view cameras, like its predecessors.

Another weekend, another Quencher! Yeah, this one’s a bit more special, as it’s me, Christos, writing it instead of Ernice. The man’s really caught in the middle of a ton of work, but it’s for the good of all of us.

The Comic-Con of 2013 is upon us, and with it, tons of reveals, new information on upcoming games, but most importantly, fresh stuff for the next-gen of console gaming. 2013 is shaping up to be one of the best in gaming’s recent years, and rightfully so. Not only because of the new consoles, but because some games are truly making the push for something new, revolutional – something game-changing. Instead of having a generation where your Average Joe has a prettier floating gun to shoot prettier people, we’re reaching a generation of seamless worlds, unprecedented connectivity between platforms and devices, and new things to do by the truckload.

Regarding my plans for the weekend, though? I’ll be rolling on some Battlefield 3 with Ernice, boot up my Xbox for some Halo 2, continue my playthrough of Final Fantasy X on the Playstation 2, shit my pants on some Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, choo-choo around on my 3DS with Zelda: Spirit Tracks, and to wrap it up, go completely old-school with Super Mario Bros on my NES. Whatcha gonna do, Gamesthirstians? Whatever it is, hopefully it makes you happy!

Discussing the game during its Q1 FY13-14 earnings call last night, Ubisoft explained that it had increased its expectations for the new IP following a positive reception at last month’s E3.

“What is true is that three months ago when we announced our result we were referencing in our plan we had billed up Watch Dogs with expectations slightly below what Assassin’s Creed 1 did when it was first released, [which] was 6.2m. So after E3, what we’ve said today was that we do feel that we can expect – or that’s what we have billed in our expectation – slightly above the 6.2m that Assassin’s Creed did.”

The game goes on sale on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii U on November 22, 2013, with planned Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions on their way.

A beautiful Eurogamer article on Mark Cerny’s time at the Develop Conference in England today, where he spoke about PS4, and how a ”renaissance of gaming” was being fueled by the independent game development community that would usher in a PSOne-like era on the new console. Full article below.

The PlayStation 4 will rekindle the diversity of games last seen during the PSone era, Sony has said.

During his keynote presentation at the Develop Conference in Brighton this morning, PS4 chief architect Mark Cerny predicted a “renaissance of gaming”, fuelled by indie titles, that will echo the early years of PlayStation.

“With PSone there was no way to make an indie title,” he said. “The hardware didn’t support digital downloads and all games were distributed on CD-ROMS. There was no way for creators to directly reach their audience.

“But triple-A game development was very different than it was today. Crash Bandicoot, which sold six million units, was created by just seven people. A typical individual would contribute broadly in the creation of a game.

“Due to small team sizes the barriers to creating new types of experiences were quite low, and consequently the diversity of games available at retail was quite high. As a result, there was a certain fun factor that was an intrinsic part of the PlayStation DNA in those years.

“Concept-driven titles like PaRappa the Rapper, Devil Dice and Intelligent Cube were well received by the game playing audience and each went on to sell over a million units.”

This diversity was lost on PlayStation 2, Cerny explained, because development teams had to get bigger to realise the power of the console. And the problem only accelerated with the arrival of PlayStation 3.

Now, after breaking down a number of barriers to indie development on PlayStation, Sony has made steps to help the sector thrive.

It’s streamlined its processes, made game development easier on its raft of platforms and boosted the discoverability of indie titles to ensure they can be found on the PlayStation Store.

“The console audience has woken up to the potential of indie games,” Cerny said, pointing to the success of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead series.

“With the release of PlayStation 4, we understand we have an opportunity to fundamentally alter the landscape of gaming.”

The PS4′s PC-like architecture makes it easier to develop original titles directly on the platform, he said. “Even if the games use simpler graphics engines, the increased system memory means it’s trivial to support larger animation sets or more detailed virtual worlds.

“On PS4, I believe the indie paradigm will have the hardware as enabler, not as the central player, which is to say that Octodad isn’t about the triangle count, it’s about keeping your cephalopod nature a secret from your human family.”

Cerny praised Sony Computer Entertainment’s publisher and relations specialist Adam Boyes for spearheading the company’s drive to increase the number of indie titles on PlayStation.

“On the business side, we’ve had a bit of an epiphany,” Cerny said. “Since Adam Boyes joined SCE, pretty much the whole process has been overturned. He wanted us to look at the day in the life of an indie developer, and challenged us to explain whether our processes were helping or hindering the creation of the diverse titles we were looking for.

“We ended up radically simplifying concept approval. We fully support self-publishing across all platforms, so it’s now possible for developers to maintain complete creative and financial control. We now pretty much support any business model, whether it be buy-to-play, free-to-play, episodic or micro-transactions. And we’re doing what we can to support indie development financially as well, whether that be through loaner dev kits or our incubation program or direct support from the Pub Fund.

“We also understand that accessibility is paramount. So we’ve gone from putting our process out front to putting people out front, which is to say your indie journey on PS4 as a developer begins by tweeting Shahid Ahmad, not by filling out a form.”

And with PS4, expected to launch this November, improvements to the user interface should help, too. Cerny noted the Share button, which will allow gamers to “easily elevate” the experiences they enjoy, before revealing digital distribution is getting increased prominence, with buying games on the PlayStation Store “radically simplified”.

“So, as a result of these technical, business and platform factors, we believe that a renaissance of gaming is coming on PS4,” Cerny concluded. “Heavy content will thrive on the platform, but in many ways we will also be returning to the creative freedom and broad content that made the early years of PlayStation so unforgettable.”

Ninja Theory, the studio known for its serial game developer habits, crafting titles like Heavenly Sword for Sony, Enslaved: Odyssey to The West for Namco and the Devil May Cry reboot for Capcom is at it again, this time working on a next-gen triple A game that’s being helmed on Unreal Engine 4.

The studio first peaked our interest through a tweet:

Ninja Theory are hiring! Have you got what it takes to be our next Ninja? Check our career page for details http://t.co/lcf1iqm923 #gamejobs

Now, all one has to do is visit Ninja Theory’s Ninja Theory Career Page, Senior Designer, Technical Director and Lead Character Artist pages to confirm that the new game is quietly being developed by the studio.

It’s anyone’s guess what game, new IP or sequel, Ninja Theory is working on, but this revelation is quite exciting. Oh, and don’t worry about my header image, it’s just a pipe dream.

Thanks, AGB.
