This is rumor water, so drink sparingly, but it appears, as per Nintendo News that, in light of Wii U’s dismal showing and Nintendo’s flailing quarterly results, that the company is simultaneously developing two powerful consoles: a handheld called Fusion DS and a home console dubbed Fusion Terminal.
The codename of the console makes sense, as Nintendo owns the domain: Nintendofusion. However the origin of said domain stemmed from the Nintendo Fusion Tour — a touring rock music and video game festival sponsored by Nintendo of America. The tour began in 2003, which explains the date of the domain name purchase.

So two new powerful consoles MIGHT be coming from Nintendo. One a handheld and the other a machine to be placed underneath your TV. Apparently they’ll work seamlessly as one unit, a la PS4 and PS Vita — and maybe even better. What do you guys think? Would you buy a newer, more beastly Nintendo home console?

Let’s talk!

Biggest Project Cafe rumor to hit the net has just surfaced, as a trusted IGN source has told the site that not only is Project Cafe real, but the next-gen hardcore console could see a release this year if Nintendo so chooses. Lots more juicy details are also packed in the reveal, including design and pricing.

According to the insider, the console will cost between $350 and $400 based on estimated manufacturing costs, and it will ship from Taiwanese manufacturer, Foxconn. Foxconn is the same company responsible for PS3 Slim and the Xbox 360 redesigned console.

Project Cafe as it’s now called will start leaving the factory in October, which means it could be ready by November. However the source claimed Nintendo might opt to wait until 2012 to allow developers time to make more games.

By doing that, Nintendo might also get the opportunity to “lower the retail price of the system with lower profit margins to make the price more alluring,” tactics used by both Sony and Microsoft.

But that’s now all:

“The system is based on “AMD’s R700 GPU architecture, not AMD’s Fusion technology as previously believed, which will, as previously reported, out perform the PlayStation 3′s NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system’s CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster. The system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, though it has not been determined whether that will be a staple feature.”

The source also told IGN that the console’s size will be almost the same as the original Xbox, but will look more like a futuristic SNES. The insider did confirm that the controls will feature integrated touchscreens with the capability of streaming games to each controller while “feasibly provide a virtualized console for each individual unit.”

Many names are being flung around Nintendo, but “Stream” seems to stand out, however there are many other names being considered.

Rumor has it Nintendo will release <del datetime="2011-04-21T21:31:41+00:00">Stream</del> Project Cafe in June, at E3.

Just like the days of PS3 Slim, when all sorts of mock-up images were hitting the internet on what seemed to be a daily basis, the cycle for Project Cafe has commenced. See how terrible the first one looks below the break.

According to EEDAR analyst Jessie Divnich, speaking to NowGamer, “[Wii's] successor’s name will not include the word ‘Wii’. He argued that with Wii, Nintendo had driven the hardcore gamers adrift, and it would be too hard to get them back with a console named after it.

The analyst had no clue how much the new console would cost, but being that it’ll be more powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360, he predicted the range $299 to $349.

More rumors have surfaced concerning specs, with The Kyoto Report claiming Nintendo development teams are working on “tracking systems and head-mounted stereoscopic displays”.

Elsewhere on the web, ugly mock-ups are already surfacing. Per Kotaku, via 4Chan, the first image has landed. See it blow:

We’ll keep you posted as more develops.

Whatever Nintendo does has to be revolutionary. Whether it’s the Super Nintendo of old, or its latest console, the Wii – it has to be different. In fact, although you may not like the Wii that much, (I don’t) the console’s changed the game forever, forcing Sony and Microsoft down a route they thought was futile, but now, both Kinect and PS Move are selling millions – thanks to Nintendo.

But the Wii’s lost steam, and analysts have been calling for a new console from the legendary gaming company for months. Will it happen? It’s basically confirmed for an E3 2011 reveal, and as news surface, we’re learning more about the console. We already know it’ll be more powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360, but what we didn’t know is how excited developers who’ve seen it are about the system. I mean, who wouldn’t? The hardware’s spotting an HD screen on its controller. What Nintendo’s forging is “unreal” says one source.

“Publishers are already planning launch titles and it’s all very exciting,” said another source to CVG. “The hardware is even more powerful than current HD consoles and backwards compatible with Wii. The controller will be all-new and has a HD screen on it.”

Nintendo’s commented, saying it doesn’t comment on “rumor and speculation”.

It’s almost official that Nintendo plans to wow us come E3 2011 with a new console. But the rumors have been around for a while, and looking back in our thread arsenal, we came upon some rather lofty quotes from the company’s execs. The one spotted in the headline was from Metroid Creator Yoshio Sakamoto.

“At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new game console,” he said while speaking to 3djuegos.

“We have never done what others have. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue this time as well. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.”

Meanwhile, more news concerning the console has landed. Mainly that it’ll be more powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360.

That’s according to sources close to Kotaku, which means we should see big games like Battlefield and other big names land on the new console from Nintendo.

In fact, Kotaku even reached out to the company, however the usual message was issued: “Nintendo does not comment on rumor or speculation”.

Like I said, E3 2011 is already here.
