By now we all know of the damning 8.9 magnitude earthquake that left some parts of Japan in shambles, killing thousands, with thousands more unaccounted for. Now, we’re starting to learn some of the repercussions against the gaming industry there, as servers for some games go down, other titles being canceled, and thousands of consoles from the big three washed away in the tsunamis that followed.

Back in 2009, I ran a humble blog. It was around May of that year Hideo Kojima, the legendary Metal Gear Solid creator, began teasing us through a countdown website, his next title in the much lauded franchise. On the screen of my computer, the website displayed a field with grass, (green and brown), grey skies, and constant lightning cutting through the clouds.
The clock was ticking, and eventually we deciphered that it was set to come to an end at the beginning of Microsoft’s press conference at E309. The entire media was buzzing: “what’s this all about?” many would ask, but soon enough we would know the answer…
I remember the moment like it was happening now: Kojima came on stage with a translator and announced Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the latest MGS title for the Xbox 360. I went to the countdown website and there he was, Raiden. I was like, WHAT THE H……..

From great story-telling to topnotch narration, Naughty Dog got everything right with that game. So much so that EA sees the title as a “beacon of hope” for the industry.
