The firm’s Game and Network Services division, of which PlayStation is a part, saw sales of $2.55 billion during the quarter ending June 30th, up an astonishing 95.7 percent year-on-year.

Why the stratospheric rise? Sony gives credit to strong PlayStation 4 sales and a significant increase in network services revenues (all the money you spend on the PlayStation Network). In fact the PS3 saw a decline in sales, yet PS4 momentum has been so strong and network spending so high, that the last-gen console’s decline was easily offset.

All told, the Game division made a profit of $43 million compared to a loss of $159 million last year.

Sony lumped the numbers of PS3 and PS4, as been the company’s custom for years, revealing that 3.5 million of both consoles were shipped last quarter. When Microsoft’s numbers are taken into consideration, shipping 1.1 million Xbox 360s and Xbox One units during the same period, the math shows a ration of 3:1 in Sony’s favor.

Both PS4 and Xbox One launched last Christmas, and both got off to a solid start. However it’s Sony’s PlayStation 4 that’s managed to light the industry on fire sales wise, selling 7 million units at last count, while Microsoft has only managed to ship 5 million Xbox Ones. The big difference here of course being sold through PS4s as compared to shipped Xbox One consoles. The latter suggests that Microsoft, with its optimistic Xbox One projections, overstocked channels that are taking longer than expected to clear.

Overall, Sony saw sales of $17 billion, an increase of 5.8 percent compared to last year. The mammoth share of the sales were due to Sony’s Game division and its Hollywood branch (Sony Pictures), and favorable exchange rates (the lower the yen, the better Sony and other Japanese companies perform).

Company-wide profits increased to $268 million — again on the back of the firm’s Game division, as well as the sale of some Sony buildings in Japan.

PS Vita TV is coming out in Japan (at the moment), and thus, Sony released a new video showing the device in action, which should answer a lot of fan questions. Luckily, though Japanese in audio, it is subtitled; but it matters little, it’s the images you’re here for.

Shuhei Yoshida, SCE Worldwide Studios boss, said that he would like PlayStation games everywhere, from PC’s to tablets.

In an interview with Dengeki Online,Yoshida said:

“Speaking of the ultimate goal, we would like to deliver PlayStation games to all devices. So we’re considering various things like PC, TVs, Blu-ray players, smartphones and tablets. We hope to continue to expand not only to Sony devices, but even to devices other than Sony’s. This is still being studied.

We previously spoke about PlayStation going from hardware to something closer to a service, regardless of the device — Of course PlayStation will still be the center, but I think we would like to expand to different things.”

So, what say you? Is this a sign of Sony dipping its toes into uncharted waters?

Masayasu Ito explains.

When the PlayStation Vita TV was revealed during the TGS pre-show, people across the world were welcoming it. However, when it was announced that Europe and the West are not in the plans for now, fans were disappointed.

Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito, speaking to Eurogamer, said that response had been stronger than expected.

“Of course we are thinking of launching it in the US and Europe. But when it comes to the timing, we’ll have to watch the environment and identify what other services are available in the US and Europe and whether we’ll have to add other services.”

Netflix and similar services are the obvious contenders that fit Ito’s description, and Sony’s Gaikai cloud service comes to mind for game streaming.

“We’ll have to look at all of this before deciding on a launch in Europe and the United States.”

In another interview, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House said Sony had been “very encouraged” by the “very positive” Western response to the device. As he explained, the TV box has no competition in Japan and that’s their initial focus, but Western audiences aren’t out of the question.

“The reason we wanted to launch PlayStation Vita TV in Japan first was because we think that there is a significant gap in this market even for a pure streamed TV box. There isn’t really a competitor here that’s staked out a claim. And frankly, in my own view, Japan is a little behind the adoption curve in video streaming services.

So we thought we could have an opportunity in Japan to really establish a leadership position by having an addition differentiated killer app – which is having our huge library of streaming games content.”

Lastly, House said Sony would need to search the market more thoroughly before launching the device elsewhere.

“The landscape is different elsewhere. [Some of Vita TV's capabilities] are already part and parcel of how consumers view media there. We need to look at each of those markets and how we approach them.”

It’s a rather obvious feature, many would contend, and I agree, but a host of gamers have been asking why isn’t Vita TV shown with DualShock 4 when advertised, instead of DualShock 3. And to that, Sony worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, while demonstrating PS4 remoteplay via Vita TV, explained that because DualShock  4 isn’t out yet, but Vita TV is already available for preorder, and will go on sale soon in Japan, it had to be bundled with the PS3′s controller, because PS4 won’t be available in Japan until February 2014.

However once PS4 becomes available in Japan — or even elsewhere, pending Japanese gamers want to import the new controller, then of course, it’ll work with Vita TV.
