PS4 Bestselling Console In U.S. For Fifth Consecutive Month

PS4 Bestselling Console In U.S. For Fifth Consecutive Month

The NPD results are in, and they show that PS4 is yet again the number 1 selling console in the U.S., topping Xbox One and all other consoles for the fifth consecutive month, while also leading in multiplatform game sales.

Historically a slow month, May 2014 was a boon for the games industry, with both hardware and software sales performing better year-over-year.  Hardware sales jumped to $187 million (95 percent), and software sales by 57 percent ($284 million). And although next-gen consoles lead the way, Wii U and Vita also saw sales growth, thanks to strong games like Wii U’s Mario Kart, and the PS Vita Borderlands 2 bundle.

Software Sales:

May 2014 Software top ten (new physical retail only)

  1. Watch Dogs – Ubisoft (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  2. Mario Kart – Nintendo (Wii U)
  3. MLB 14: The Show (PS3, PS4, Vita)
  4. Wolfenstein: The New Order – Bethesda (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. Minecraft – Microsoft/Sony (PS3, Xbox 360)
  6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (3DS, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. NBA 2K14 – 2K (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Titanfall – EA(PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  9. Kirby Triple Deluxe – Nintendo (3DS)
  10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

We’re awaiting responses from Sony, Microsoft and hopefully Nintendo about these results. Once we have them, they’ll be posted.

One last note, the NPD Group only account for physical game sales, and with digital distribution becoming more and more popular, one must consider these numbers, on the software side of things at least, with the understanding that the games industry is actually in better shape than these numbers suggest.
