Amazon is currently working behind the scenes with game creators and publishers, testing a brand new console that will compete directly with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for living room dominance, sources close to VG247 have said, with the console set to launch later this year.
According to the sources, the hardware, which currently goes by a number of different codenames, is now being tested with popular Android and iOS games.
In its current state, the Amazon console looks like a redesigned PSOne, “grey in color, oblong in shape and with sharp edges. However, the pre-production unit is likely to have a full makeover before any official release.”
The report added: “The hardware is being created in conjunction with subsidiary Lab 126, designers of Amazon’s Kindle devices.
Amazon will target an affordable price point – we’re told below $300 in the US – in a pricing move similar to Amazon’s marketing of the Kindle Fire HD against high-end iPad hardware from Apple.”
My take:
The games industry keeps on growing, but would you buy an Amazon console? Give me your thoughts in the comments.
