Xbox One cloud will require regular updates, can reboot system mid-game

“Problematic for a game.”

IGameReponsibly revealed the words of Xbox Live lead program manager John Bruno during yesterday’s GDC Next, words that aren’t favorable for the Xbox One.

The Xbox One will require regular updates because of the cloud, and that can cause the system to reboot in the middle of a game.

“Once in a while, rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted whether your code is running or not. That’s a problematic thing for a game, and oftentimes it’s in the middle of a multiplayer session. We’ve worked very hard to overcome that, but that’s not to say it’s going to be a reality in every case.”

When the IGameResponsibly team asked how Respawn would battle such issues, since Titanfall is extremely reliant on the cloud to the point it will be unavailable if the cloud needs updating or a reboot, Bruno answered:

“I can’t answer that. I don’t know what the guys over at Titanfall have built into their game. It’s up to the game developer. If they want to rely more on our XBLC service, we’re happy to support that. We do provide a platform for them to persist data, but that’s up to the developer to utilize that.”

This could prove very problematic for developers and gamers alike, but we’d like to hear Microsoft’s side on it. To me, it sounds like the reliance on online applications and features is only a headache for gamers, rather than a glimpse of “the future”.
