Games Thirst – Amazing Life
SCE’s CEO explains in an interview.
Do you like F2P games? Like them or not, they’re here to stay, and possibly flourish, as Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House says. Speaking to Wall Street Journal, he anticipates an increase in F2P titles.
“We may well see free-to-play games on console be a much bigger factor. It will be a big part of the console landscape in this generation. But it may ramp up first in Japan because there is more experience of developing those free-to-play gaming experiences.”
CCP Games chief marketing officer David Reid, speaking to the Wall Street Journal as well, said that it’s “only a matter of time before free-to-play gets big on the console.”
CCP’s ambitious Dust 514, a free-to-play shooter on the PS3 that ties withPC MMO EVE Online, was released earlier this year, and this could only be the start.
The PlayStation 4 already has lots going for it; DC Universe Online, Warframe, War Thunder and more are just but a handful of free-to-play titles that are coming to Sony’s next-gen console, some of them for the first time ever.
Our take: Console-only players haven’t really gotten to know the F2P model all that much. It’s only natural that their curiosity will, at least initially, give a rise to F2P games on consoles. Like with boxed, full-price games though, F2P games vary from fantastic to abominations.
