One of the reasons Microsoft thinks that it’s Xbox One always-online feature is good is because gamers, most of them, are always playing games online.
That’s what VP at Microsoft Game Studios, Phil Spencer told Polygon in an interview when asked about gamers who live in rural areas in America, and gamers all around the world, who don’t a have access to the internet.
He said:
What we’re seeing in games … is online community gaming is becoming a predominant way that people play.
You see so many of these large games that are out there that rely on and are kind of made by the connection people have with their friends, and how they play cooperatively and competitively with the millions of people on Xbox Live and other ecosystems,” he said. “It’s a predominant form of gaming today.
Spencer also contended that what they’ve proposed with Xbox One isn’t far from what other industries are doing, pointing towards iTunes and Steam, where content associated with a user’s identity is stored in the cloud, ensuring that once a player has “installed the game, [it] makes it always available to you and instantly available to you.” The problem is once your Xbox One is disconnected for 24hrs at your home, and one hour if you’re accessing your content from elsewhere, your library becomes useless.
