Should Sony Have Waited To Announce PS4 After Microsoft’s Next Xbox Reveal?

I’ve been thinking hard lately… Microsoft has twice pushed back its next Xbox reveal ever since Sony announced PS4, surely making changes to its losing strategy.

The thing is Microsoft thought it had next-gen in the bag until Sony’s February 20th meeting. Redmond was about to block the sale of used games, block gamers without high-speed internet from playing even offline games, and turning the Xbox into an entertainment device with games being just a part of the bigger picture.

But now we’ve heard that the software giant has completely overhauled its old strategy in light of Sony’s winning PS4 reveal, making changes to successfully compete with Sony. A good thing for gamers but definitely a bad thing for Sony.

Here’s the question, would it have served Sony best if it waited until Microsoft revealed the next Xbox, and then make its move?

    If Sony had waited, people would be saying they should have went first. Thats all we heard this gen is that Sony letting MS go first was suicide. Mind you, that Sony does have time to change a few things themselves. The hardware wont be changed, but other things can be fixed/changed before launch. We already know that nxtbox will be all about entertainment and less about games. MS has made that clear. I’m PS4 day one…if possible and nxtbox eventually. Both Sony and MS will be playing follow the leader at least a little. Hardware specs are pretty much set at this point, the rest can and will change on the fly.

    You talk the truth, man. You talk the truth. I suppose I’d be writing up a piece asking why didn’t they go first if they hadn’t. Humans.

    But MS did make some changes after Sony’s reveal – it begs the question – what if they all showed what they had only at E3 – with MS announcing the blocking of used games, no play without internet connection, etc – and Sony doing what it did in February, one would think Sony would have the upper hand…

    We’ll have to wait and see how much indeed Microsoft altered its strategy on May 21st.

    I think it is an interesting hindsight but inevitably someone has to go first and Sony took a strong step forward, so strong that it knocked Microsoft back to the drawing board with their nextbox. Also things like the backlash from the no used games and always online fiascoes likely weighed heavily on them as well. personally i do not like the way Xbox has been going. I love the games (Halo and Gears at least) but i do not like how they are forcing Kinect on us (Really the voice control in mass effect 3 couldn’t have been done on a mic?) and trying to “take over your living room.” i can’t speak for anyone else but my xbox plays games, and that is all that i use it for. Netflix is on my PS3, facebook and whatnot are on my PC or tablet. i despise the avatars (why would i want to look at a ridiculous version of myself when i turn on my xbox to play Halo 4? why?) and i don’t like their strategy of forcing you to buy their products to upgrade your system (i could have bought two new hard drives for my ps3 for the amount i spent on one for my 360).

    I hope that this generation knocks some sense into Microsoft and they get focused on the games again.

    I totally agree with you, man.
    Microsoft should stop trying to be the Apple of gaming and just stick to a good solid gaming machine. That’s what people will want out of this new Xbox, not some kind of “new way to enjoy entertainment”, or whatever they call it.

    Microsoft needs to remember what made the Xbox what it is today, and that’s games. Not all these other “things”.
