Here’s what I’ll say: Microsoft hurry up and announce the new Xbox already, because these rumors aren’t doing you any good.
Speaking to NowGamer, David Connolly, managing director at Xing Interactive expressed skepticism with Microsoft’s strategy, saying that he’s heard talk from good sources, people who are close to Microsoft, that the next Xbox won’t play second-hand games and, like the prior rumors have claimed, will require an internet connection to play even offline games.
Said Connolly:
We hear different things from the two big players. Sony are actively asking for more retailers “past, present and new” to help them support their next PS launch.
He went on:
I have spoken to sources close to Microsoft on the other hand who insist that the next Xbox will not be compatible with second hand, will require permanently on connection, and ‘you’ll have to go through Microsoft to do anything’.
So that would not be good news! Maybe another reason to support PC publishers can I say?!
Discussing a potentially digital-only future and its importance on the sector that Xing Interactive primarily targets, Connolly says the way its looking now, Microsoft will be the company causing trouble.
There could be a big issue on consoles with one of the big players going their own way. An independent retailer put it this way ‘Microsoft will still make a profit out of Xbox. As for the rest of us, tough titty’.
Microsoft is expected to announce the next Xbox on May 21st.
