First Steam Box Goes On Sale Holiday Season 2013, Costs $1,000

Valve wants Steam Box to compete with PS4 and Xbox 720, as the new “couch PC” will be vying for that little space underneath your TV. Well come this holiday season the competition heats up — as the first Steam Box will be available in tandem with Sony and MS’s new consoles…. There’s just one problem: $1,000.

Xi3′s Piston, the first Steam Box  of many to be revealed, will launch this holiday season starting at $1,000, the hardware manufacturer announced today.

If you preorder it before March 18th, you’ll get a $100 discount.

Xi3′s Piston is the first PC specifically designed to play games in living rooms using Steam’s Big Picture mode.

Although Valve is helping to finance the project with Xi3, the firm is also working on a Steam Box of its own, one that will also be released later this year, according to Valve boss Gabe Newell.

Said  Xi3 CEO Jason Sullivan said in a press release:

Clearly, the computer/video gaming market is huge, both in the personal computer and traditional console markets. That being said, we believe there is a crying need for a machine that captures the best of both worlds, with the upgradeability of computer gaming rigs and the design and form factor of consoles. We believe our Piston Consoles do exactly that-deliver the beauty and small size of consoles with the upgradeability of computers.

Who’s getting one?

god, you taking the piss or what!?
laugh my fucking a$$ off, anyone who buys this needs to be signed into a mental asylum STAT!
1000 bucks my a$$, i could build a mini console PC with WAY higher specs than this for a thousand bucks!
lets see, i could buy a brand new golf for 200 grand, or i could buy a brand new ferrari for the same price.
    hmmmmmmm, tough decision!
christ, and here i was hopeful this could actually shake up the market a bit!

  • Ghost250

    honestly who’s gonna buy this?

  • Ernice Gilbert

@Ghost: Not many, although there are still some uninformed folks who’ll get this. smh.

  • Ernice Gilbert

@Nick: Yeah, they can’t shake up the market with this.

  • nick

i can see offices buying this simply because its so small, areas where space is a issue.
but as a GAMING device its about as useful as a cup of water at an oil rig fire!

I’m not buying this, that’s for sure! I kinda wanted it when they announced it some months ago, but now that we know how much it costs, never mind.
