purpose is cost effectiveness.
same as the X21, budget PCs.
they can afford to sell these at a lower price point than consumers could source the parts themselves because there going to be mass produced.
also size most PCs are fairly large, much bigger and less portable than consoles.
there trying to turn PCs into the form factor and affordability of consoles, while keeping the openess of PCs.
whether that will be successful im not so sure, people like building their own PCs, and if they wanted something portable whats wrong with a tablet or laptop?
more portable than consoles really, thinner, lighter, and they have a screen attached to them!

i don't see the purpose of valve getting in the hardware/console race their machine from what they said serves no purpose at all. they say the steambox is suppose to bridge the gap for console gamers to go towards PC gaming. but wouldn't a console just build a rig themselves instead buying another console which is virtually what the steambox is. unless they allow you to upgrade it, but even that people can just build a rig if they wanted to upgrade something that'll last. i don't see valve making their franchises exclusive since they want to stay as open as possible on all platforms. so i don't understand really their goal? i think valve has bit off to much they could chew regardless how much money they have, if consumers don't see a purpose then why buy it? the ouya on the other hand is dead in the water, there is no buzz around the ouya hell the normal person doesn't even know what the hell that thing is.
