Earlier in the year I asked the Games Thirst community if they believed Sony would start charging for PSN when PS4 arrives, the answer from most was yes. Today, I have a new, survey-like question for you: Would you pay if Sony actually starts charging for the service?
Let’s talk. Do it here: Because money matters.

can’t really say. if its for features then fine but if its for playing online then that’s unacceptable. The one Ace-In-The-Hole for sony is that you can play online for free. to be frank a pay to play model is literally dying. every other online service in gaming doesn’t make even you pay accept for microsoft. these services out here like steam, origin, PSN, & possibly the nintendo network get better and better. eventually microsoft making you pay will be their downfall in the end. Sony has just leveled their sales against microsoft with the PS3, with allowing free online. that just goes to show people are waking to the fact that they have all these services just as good as xbox live that they can use for free.
You make a strong case for free, Ghost, strong case. But Honestly pay-to-play is not dying – it’s just transitioned into a subscription model. That’s how firms make “stable” money these days. Charge users a monthly, quarterly or yearly fee for services.

I would buy into it. Yes, to be able to play online games. Sony should do it.
thats not true if subscription models or pay to play aren’t dying then why is it everything starting to become free to play? even developers are implementing free-to-play features in their games. uncharted 3 for example, you can either unlock the stuff in game or you can pay for an unlock key on the PS store. hell look at what happened to CoD Elite. its just the facts, subscriptions models and pay to play models are indeed dying. the evidence is out there.
See, they’re not really free-to-play, bro, they’re more what you’d call “freemium”, where gamers get a taste and if they like it, they pay for content moving forward. The old saying is true: nothing is free.
i think your misinterpreting what i’m saying you can either unlock everything in-game or you can pay for an unlock code to use the whatever the content is at the get go.
Understood, but you still wind up paying money, won’t you?
No company makes games, even if they’re free-to-play, for the sole purpose of making it. These companies make games to make money – whether freemium or whatever. In fact I’ve heard pubs like EA talk about freemium being more lucrative than the current model – that says a lot.
well your gonna pay money for the game itself but you don’t have to pay to unlock stuff unless you want too. which personally is way better model than pay-to-play. it gives the gamer more options, either invest the time and unlock all the content or you can pay a fee and all the content will be unlocked from the get-go.
If the move forward with the current PS model, then i won’t have any problem with them making it mandatory.
I would switch as I went from Xbox to PS because it was free to play
hell no!
i dont even pay for XBLA, and thats 100000 times better than PSN!
well if they start charging then i wouldnt have a choice would i, id have to! most of my time on gaming is spent online, if they incorporated it with ps and gave way free titles then it wouldnt be as bad, however like ghost said the fact that its free is a huge plus for sony. They have sold just as many units as xbox world wide and sony has PS3 has always been considerably more expensive, the fact that you have to pay for xbox kinda evens this out. I think they have to release ps4 with free online gaming, it will really be a huge advantage over xbox. THey could always play dirty and introduce it a couple of years down the line when they have got the lions share of the market
personally i dont think they should charge, most games have online passes that you have to use and their own premium services that you could be liable to pay for, if you had to pay for online gaming and then had to buy an online pass too that really would take the piss
“If you had to pay for online gaming and then had to buy an online pass too that really would take the piss.” That’s what MS is doing now with Xbox Live. Even some game demos are Gold exclusive. That’s just crazy. The reason I made this a TC topic is because Sony really needs the money. They are hurting bad.
@Nick: What you mean by you’re not paying for Live Gold? It’s free down under, or something?
dont use it, so i dont pay for it.
only time ive had a gold sub is when ive been given trials and such.
or codes through the xbox rewards program.
Well your comment is misguided, then. Made it sound as if you had Gold for free or something.
its not misguided, i said i dont even pay for XBLA gold and its 100000 times better.
meaning if im not going to pay for XBLA when its 100000 times better, then why would i pay for PSN?
I personally wouldn’t HAVE to pay, seeing as I usually keep to single-player, but online downloads and DLC are kinda important as well, as long as it’s not as butt-fuckingly expensive as XBL then I would, but only because I need mah DLC!
