PS3 Has Shipped 70 Million Units Worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that since 2006, its flagship console has shipped 70 million units worldwide, a significant milestone officially achieved on November 4th, 2012.

There are now over 3,590 games published for the PlayStation 3, and over 595 million units sold worldwide.

PS Move has done a good job itself, selling 15 million units since its launch in 2010, and supports over 400 games.

In its announcement, Sony noted the evolution of the PS3 over the years, including two console revisions – the first being dubbed PS3 Slim, the second, PS3 Super-Slim. The latter is said to be the most energy efficient, and boast large HDD sizes.

As for its online service, PSN launched alongside PS3 in 2006, and now boasts over 170,000 pieces of downloadable content of which 157,000 are game-related. The network operates in 59 territories and boasts a vast array of entertainment applications for music, movies and more.

PSN was re-launched in October for the US, Europe and South Africa.

    Yep, leveled. Proves the staying power of the PlayStation brand. Still Microsoft’s Xbox 360 managed to dominate this generation’s positive news. No doubt.

    And I just heard that the 3DS is closing in on the sales of PS3. Not bad for a handheld.

    Ops sorry I meant that the 3DS is having a faster sale than the PS3, it already has 20 million sales word-wide.

    i can just imagine his phone ringing from a witheld number, with some scary creepy voice on the other end saying 3ds shipped early as many units as Ps3′s before the phoneline goes dead lol

    so, time to hang up its boots then?
    it will be intersting to see when $ony decide to replace it, and if they will support it for much longer like they have the ps2, and if it will still sell well after replacement like the ps2 has.
    probably will do especially if the rumors are accurate and the ps4 will be using X86 architecture making ps3 compatibility almost impossible.
    thats probably what they bought gaikai for, so they can use that instead of having to use emulators or more expensive hardware chips for BC.
    but not many people have adequate facilities to be able to use streaming services, so they will be stuck with the ps3.
    eh, whatever.
    i just hope $ony does what they did with the ps3, and offer several models of the ps4 with different features, and this time dont drop and replace them!
    bring a new model, a new design fine, but dont drop the old design!
    wish they still offered the fatties, they look so much nicer than the newer ones!
