Apple Announces iPhone 5 – Out September 21st, Preorder Yours This Thursday

Tim Cook has just announced the iPhone as “the most beautiful product” the company’s ever made, bar none. All details inside.

The firm’s Phil Schiller then spoke of the phone like the best thing, ever:

So, iPhone 5. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It’s designed and built to an exacting level of standard unlike anything we, or anyone in our industry, have made before.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike we’ve ever undertaken before.

It’s the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet. 7.6mm thick, 18% thinner than before. It’s the world’s thinnest smartphone, says Phil. Weighs 112 grams. 20% lighter than the 4S.

Phil continued:

Can you make a phone that has everything the iPhone 4S has, before you add new features, in a design that is smaller and lighter than the previous product. The challenge is to make it better and smaller.

It’s a 326ppi Retina display, 4-inches. 1136 x 640 resolution. Same width, but taller. It has five rows of icons, plus the four shortcuts on the bottom.

What is the design center for? That’s just how we designed the iPhone 5. It’s this… your hand. As you carry your phone it should fit beautifully in your hand.

Carriers:

In the US: Sprint, AT&T and Verizion. All will support LTE.

Canada: Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin.

Asia: KDDI SoftBan, KT, SK telecom, SmartTone.

About Antenna: “And we have a really unique innovation with a dynamic antenna… it can automatically switch antenna connections.” Similar to how the 4S worked.”

Battery Life: 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing. 10 hours on WiFi browsing.

Apple says “every aspect of iPhone 5. Everything has been enhanced.”

Pictures:

The phone gives a final image result of 28 megapixels, but it’s an eight megapixel phone, and even if you weave or shake a bit but it’ll smooth things out and remove any crazy artifacts if someone moves.

Says Phil:

While the camera is amazing for taking pictures, it’s also a lot better for video as well.

It’s 1080p still but with better video stabilization, and there’s facial recognition. You can grab photos, too, still.

The front-facing camera is now 720p, backside illuminated.

Audio:

There are three microphones. Front, bottom, and back for voice recognition and noise cancellation. The speaker has a 5-magnet transducer. That’s three more magnets in your transducer.

Bluetooth for audio, WiFi for AirPlay or syncing to iTunes, “and best of all with iCloud we can download all our content wirelessly.”

Bose, JBL, B&W, B&O and others are already working on new docks and speakers.

Thanks, Engadget.
