Xbox 720: Microsoft R&D patents 360 degree full 3D game environment technology

“Environmental display” device patent filing has taken place, issued by Microsoft’s R&D department.Featuring 3D depth camera, it appears the device will emit infrared light patterns and register where is the player blocking the signal, a technique which is similar to that of the Kinect. But the patent suggest Kinect’s 3D camera will play a role, which is used to separately calculate the posture and various movements the player does.

Also, the rumored Kinect 3D glasses leaked earlier is suggested to be used with this new technology that’s used to register where the player is looking y sending signals to the glasses, making it function like the Wiimote, which functions the same way between it and the sensor bar.

The patent was discovered by Patently Apple, which also quotes the document as saying that “an immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display.”

Microsoft also stated that “the user may enjoy an immersive 3-D experience using suitable headgear, such as active shutter glasses configured to operate in synchronization with suitable alternate-frame image sequencing at primary display and environmental display.”
