The moment of truth has arrived and Hideo Kojima has indeed stunned the games industry with his latest announcement. Introducing Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, the all-new, open-world, yes, open-world Metal Gear Solid game.
The game was announced at Metal Gear Solid’s 25th anniversary celebration in Japan, and was demonstrated on Konami’s Fox Engine.
“This announcement is a challenge from Kojima Productions to the world,” said Hideo Kojima.
The footage that was show demonstrated how the engine handles weather like rain, and other elements, clothing textures and lighting.
According to Kotaku, who had representatives from its Japan site on the scene, the demo showed Snake “crawled to avoid some searchlights. After a quick stealth kill, he hopped in a jeep and called in a helicopter for evac. The concept behind Ground Zeroes is that this is a “Game without Game Over”. So even if a player is discovered in this stealth title, the part where the game would usually end (their discovery) turns into their escape. It sounds like Kojima Productions is adding a new spin to the sneaking genre—a genre the developer is a master of.”
“Sounds like MG, but the scale & atmosphere… Wow,” tweeted game localizer Mark MacDonald of 8-4.
The demo was shown running on PC with current generation consoles in mind, however it still managed to wow the people in attendance. The game, it seems, will not only be on PS3, but will also be available on Xbox 360, although the latter hasn’t been officially confirmed. Also, the Fox Engine isn’t only for current-gen machines, as Konami is preparing the engine for both cloud gaming and next generation consoles.
Thanks, Ghost!

all i can say i WOW. this is shaping up to be better than MGS4 and i honestly didn’t think it could be topped. but Hideo the god himself has proved many (including myself) wrong. can’t wait until this game comes out. personally i think this might be a next gen title though. but whatever gen it is im sure it will be immaculate.
Man, Ghost, this is just insanely awesome. You’re right, we are amongst the biggest MGS fans ever, playing every title from its since the franchise was created, but this is looking to top them all. Kojimasan is at it again.

Indeed, they’ve shaken the industry with this announcement.
And yes, I think it’ll be on next generation platforms. Kojima probably wanted to keep certain details under wraps so he went with what would make people think the obvious. A kind of smart deception, I guess. But again, Ghost, gaming is awesome again!
i just can’t wait to see it. an “OPEN WORLD” mgs. i mean that didn’t even cross my mind. i always thought that project ogre was gonna be the open world game and we were just gonna get your standard MGS. for all we know things change and this probably is project ogre. indeed gaming just got really awesome!
Yesir! I never saw this one coming, and haven’t been able to wrap around my mind yet. It’s stunning, like you said, an OPEN WORLD Metal Gear Solid title.

Insane.
Wow the engine is just awesome! Being able to run all the things at one time! And being an Open World Metal Gear Solid Title. Like Oh My Gawd that is awesome. I am so buying this.
open world MGS!?
wow, for once something actually deserves the hype it got!
amazed!!!!!
“So even if a player is discovered in this stealth title, the part where the game would usually end (their discovery) turns into their escape.”
Huuuum… Am I getting this wrong? Because all MGS games are like that, the game never ends if you’re spotted, you have to escape. So.. how is this “a new spin to the sneaking genre”?
You’re right, Wolf! The game never ends like that… In fact you can run and hide yourself out of trouble…
wasent the first ps1 MG like that?
cant remember exactly what it was called, but i remember if you were seen by anything you instantly failed the mission.
bloody hard that was!
really like the look of this though, a open world could really give this the shake up it needs!
In Extreme (I think) and European Extreme, you are Game Over-ed on discovery, and I think there’s also an option for it on Hard (or it might be Extreme).

I think that’s what he means, because if you really take the game as a stealth mission, you have to play under these settings.
