Beta and Multiplayer Features Unveiled for God of War: Ascension

On April 30th, Santa Monica revealed that God of War: Ascension would have a brutal 4 v. 4 competitive multiplayer mode. Today, in a post on PlayStation.Blog, Ascension game director, Todd Papy, discussed specific features of the multiplayer mode, and also announced a public beta.

When describing the features Ascension will bring to the table, Papy revealed that multiplayer will have a self-contained story. Within it players will discover their character’s history and what led to them becoming warriors. After players will be able to choose between four Gods: Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, and Ares, to become their champion. These Gods all have their own respective abilities and offensive play-styles, leading to some diversity between players. In regards to the diversity, Papy stated, “While each will have an incredible array of combat maneuvers, the “attack-style” of the God you align with is critical to your Warriors ‘path.’” As players win matches, they will gain XP to level up their warriors, which unlocks more powerful equipment and magic based abilities, treasures, and mystical relics. These unlocks will give additional customization options to the player’s hero, and was designed to keep players interested in multiplayer.

The main multiplayer mode will be Favor of the Gods. In Favor of the Gods players will have to reach a certain amount of “favor” to claim victory. Favor, which is essentially points, will be earned by carrying out specific actions in the match. Players can gain favor a plethora of ways including killing opponents, capturing altars, opening red chests, or setting traps, each action will have their own numerical value. To give a degree of map control, special power-ups will be scattered around the map. These power-ups give players a temporary edge against opponents, for example Hermes Boots will give increase player’s speed. More details on multiplayer – including maps, game modes, abilities, etc. are going to be revealed as Ascension reaches release, said Papy.

In reference to the open beta, Papy said it will be released later this year, and those who are PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive exclusive access first. If you are not a PlayStation Plus subscriber, he inferred there will be other ways to get access to the beta.

To top this all off, he showcased a new multiplayer trailer for the game:

If you’re fortunate enough to be at Gamescom, you will be among the first in the world able to play both multiplayer mode and a single-player demo of Ascension. For those visiting PAX later this month, there will be a God of War Panel at the expo for the first time.

@Christos I know right? I’m so excited for multiplayer it’s ridiculous. But, I do want Santa Monica to try out a new IP, with all of their creativity I’m sure they would come up with something amazing.
