Remember 1997′s first-person shooter on DOS named Blood? It was Monolith’s debut game, which was made with help from Duke’s creators, 3D Realms, but they left halfway through. Jace Hall wants that game back, 15 years later.
On a Blood fansite, The Postmortem, he explained he wants to bring the original game in today’s consoles and PC’s, with enhancements “that are similar but superior to ZDaemon’s.”
He also emphasized that he wants the game to be a free re-release, one that’s all about “gameplay and fun” to him. He even went as far as to say “I would also make it work on all platforms, and not just PC. One thing to also know is that if I go ahead and attempt to bring Blood back, I will be the one actually paying the bill. It is certainly going to cost money to do this, and I will not likely be getting my money back. It will be all for the fun of it.”
Concerning rights, Hall said that “If I indeed decide to move forward with my ideas for Blood, I certainly will be able to and will get all the support I need from all/any parties that may have legal interest in the game. You guys don’t have to worry about that. There is no problem there. Handled.”
Before beginning the project though, he wants to ensure there’s enough people from the community backing it. “I think it would good for the community to begin to create a ‘dream list’ of all the things that they would hope for with Blood,” he said. He also said he has the game’s source code, but can’t be released as it is due to rights issues.
“Of course I have the source code for Blood in my possession – however, that is not the issue. The issue is whether or not it could ever be released to the public, and I want to make it clear that it is not my decision. And please understand that the companies that can make that decision are not inclined to ever do so.”
Then, Hall confirmed on Twitter that it was him making the posts, and not an impostor. When asked if it’s true that he’s making an enhanced version of Blood, he replied saying “I said I’m thinking about it.”
