John Carmack-Backed Virtual Reality Headset Now On Kickstarter

Have you been paying attention to John Carmack’s virtually reality headset he’s been pushing so hard lately? It promises to change the way we interact with games forever, giving a level of immersion never experienced in gaming before. Well, you can have one in 29 days if you back the headset on Kickstarter.

It’s called Oculus Rift, and they say it’s the “first truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games”. Designed by Palmer Luckey, Oculus is being praised by some of the industry’s most identifiable and prominent developers. Everyone from Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski to Valve’s Gabe Newell have placed their support behind the new gadget, and DOOM 3′s mastermind and the inventor of the FPS genre John Carmack has jumped in as one of its most vocal supporters.

The goal here is to raise enough money to make Oculus developer kits available to gaming studios as quickly as possible so they could integrate the technology into their games, so by the time Ocolus hits retail, there will be enough support to push sales.

The good news is the Kickstarter’s already shattered its funding goal of $250,000 in one day, and is inching closer to $1 million.

I’ll let the video do the rest of the talking.

I can see myself using this thing! What about you guys?

Thanks, Nick!

    so,so,so,so,so,SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for this!
its just, gah, we have been dreaming about this ever since the invention of the FPS!
that was the whole point of the FPS, to put the player into the world, and were FINALLY there!
ooooooooooooo, listen to me im like a kid in a candy shop!
i REALLY hope this takes off, its a long, long, LONG way away from consumer production but were closer than we have ever been!

that said though this is the PERFECT example of what really pisses me off about the human race latley!
this technology has been available for YEARS!
so why are we only using it now?
we use to be such a fast advancing race, but the last 10 years or so we have come to a standstill!
instead of wondering whats on the other side, weve become comfortable and content to where we are.
instead of pushing the boundaries of whats possible, weve developed the its good enough attitude.
why is it always the small new indie studios, and 99% of the time freaking students, that are always the only ones who come up with amazing new technology!?
its so disappointing how much the human race has become eh its good enough.
we have the technology to do OH so, so, SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more than we do!
    so why dont we?
why are we happy sitting in the cave?
our ancestors did not invent the wheel, discover fire, and survive and evolve by sitting in the cave saying its good enough!
