Don’t like using guns and machetes? Hate seeing the blood of ‘innocents’ piling the streets of Dunwall? No problem, Dishonored gives you the freedom to complete the game without killing a soul.
“Yes, you can complete the game without killing anyone, (It was a goal of ours.) And the world reflects that to some extent,” co-creative directors of Dishonored Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio said in a Q&A session on Reddit when asked if the game could be completed without shedding blood.
The producers also said that there were a number of ways in which this could be accomplished: “As players we’re always trying to do things we didn’t do last time. “Our programmers were all trying to do crazy weird variants this week. ‘The Falling Angel playthrough,’ where you only kill by using drop-assassination.”
There are trade offs for choosing the saintly route, however, like missing out on certain cool items and powers.
“You’ll miss the assassination anims and a couple of powers like Devouring Swarm and Shadow Kill,” Colantonio said. “But playing nonlethally (and with total stealth, on a higher difficulty) often forces very tense cool moments…sublime tension as my friend Randy Smith (from Thief) likes to say. So it’s a trade-off.”
Dishonored goes on sale early October for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
