Original Story: Early Friday morning turned out to be a very tragic day in Aurora, Colorado at a movie theater where hundreds turned out to watch the premier of “Dark Knight Rises”. Authorities there have now confirmed that 12 people were killed and 50 injured as a gunman opened fire on the crowed.
Police now have in custody a 24 year-old man and recovered the gun after the shooting at approximately 12:30 am at the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center in the Denver suburb.
Witnesses say they saw the man, appearing at the front of the theater holding a rifle, handgun and a mask. The man then threw a canister that released a gas into the atmosphere, after which a hissing sound followed and he then blazed the crowed with gunshots, according to people at the theater that time.
“They got up and they started to run through the emergency exit, she said that when she turned around, all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing at people, just picking random people,” a man who talked to a few people who were inside the theater told ABC News.
People in the theater who were viewing the same movie in an adjacent room, were first unsure of what was taking place, including one guy named Jack accompanied by his son, who said the commotion began when one of the film’s action scenes began.
“These guys came through and they say someone’s shooting,” he said. “I thought, ‘oh they must have heard the fireworks, you know … I had no idea. And then the alarms started to go off in the theater.’”
There was also an explosive device found in the theater. Investigators are unsure whether the device, which police are calling a bomb, was already in place or whether it was thrown into the crowd.
The audience fled the scene as ambulances stormed in. Aurora’s police chief said that he cannot elaborate on women or children injured or dead in the shooting.
Once the gunman was apprehended, he told authorities that there are explosives in his North Aurora, Colo. residence. Investigators rushed to the apartment complex, which was quickly evacuated and is now under lockdown.
Batman: Dark Knight Rises is expected to be one of, it not the biggest grossing films of all time, however we’re not sure how this devastating event will affect turnout.
