Wii U’s Online Service Will Be Free

Wii U’s Online Service Will Be Free

Just like PSN, Nintendo’s opting to make its new online service available to all free of charge. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said forcing gamers to pay for Wii U’s online service isn’t the best approach”, and while he’s not against subscription models, he believes when everyone connects to MiiVerse together, it’ll create enough positive word of mouth to get momentum going for the new service. He reckons there are other ways to make money off the network other than charging customers to play.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Let’s see, things you still have to pay for a ton of things on PSN (and even XBL in some cases…)

    DLC
Online Passes (EA is doing this with every game)
    Visual crap for your Avatar
    PSN
    Icons
    Themes

Sure they’re optional but they all still generate revenue.

    dam straight!
i think they would be much better off doing something like plus than gold subs.
ninty having a more casual and family fanbase would struggle if they had exclusive features only available to paying customers, and thats it no discounts or anything like gold does.
plus on the other hand gives you a little bit of both, discounts and exclusive features.
there are many ways to gain revenue from online stores.
charging access to it is NOT one of them!
its one way to make sure 99% of people will never bother with it!

True, I believe their online service can thrive if it’s done correctly. They’ve got some of the best properties in gaming.
