Thirsty Conversations: What The Heck Happened To 3D Gaming?

3dgamingavatarnew

I’ve been thinking about this… I have many games that boast 3D-compatibility, however I haven’t played one of them using the technology. That’s maybe because my TV isn’t 3D-capable, but if it were, would I use the boring tech? What do you guys think, is 3D-gaming on the verge of a massive comeback, or did Sony waste its money pushing something that was dead on arrival?

Let’s talk. Do it here: The Official Games Thirst Assessment Hall.

Are u crazy?? 3d gaming is amazing the only downside is having to wear the damn glasses.

Well I haven’t experienced it for quite too long. But most of what I’ve experienced and seen doesn’t make a big different imo. I mean, in most of the games, stuff don’t pop out at you like advertised.

im not too impressed with 3d gaming, ive had my 3d tv for 18months and have probably only played about 4 or 5 games.
You get a headach after about half an hour and most 3d games the frame rate flickers, sounds weird but even though its 3d its hard to gauge depth in FPS, i.e. its harder to aim. I think 3d gmaing is on the way out, loads of games boasted 3d capability, now i rarely see newly released games withthis capability. I recently played Resistance 3 in 3d, it was so pants i soon switched back to 2d, the graphics and game play were much better 2d.
Im hoping they will improve 3d and ive not waste the extra £500 quid i forked out to get a 3d compatible tv as opposed to a normal hd one.
One game that does really show of 3d capability though is Top darts!!!

For myself, I can’t see me playing much in 3d. Unless it’s single player.
I’m too competitive to give myself the disadvantage of playing in 3d lol.

I’ve tried BF3, which doesn’t have a 3d option, but my Tv has a very good 3D scaler/converter. It looked pretty good tbh, things had more depth etc, which is all you will get unless it’s a 3d game.

I don’t see 3d really being big in games or blu rays for a couple of years. Samsung have the tech for glass less 3d, So maybe when it’s affordable and released.

As for head aches, it’s down to the individual, some notice the flickers, some don’t. Passive is meant to be much easier on the eyes for people who get headaches from active.
My biggest annoyance, is I wear glasses, so wearing a 3d pair over the top means buying a special pair, if they exist. Or having to put contacts in.

The great majority of 3d games and movies are gimmicks. Just like the motion controls in many Wii games (I said many, not all). 3d, like motion controls, are irrelevant to the experice in many cases. I belive they keep doing it the wrong way because some consumers couldn’t care less about the connection between the content and the 3d effect. To them, it does not affect the quality and what I call gimmicks is fun. IMHO, these people are easily pleased. Now, I don’t mean that to offend anyone, it is just what I think their preference is. And they in their right to like it. It is just not for me. Which does not mean that I throw the 3d in the garbage. I have seen good and relevant use of it. I just wish they nailed it more offen instead of using it as a cheap trick to attrack people’s attention.

3d gaming is cool but in the end its a novelty an gimmick. just motion gaming and tablet gaming

3D gaming is amazing in my opinion. It’s actually an advantage in some games. For example, in Uncharted 3, 3D allows you to see more. It’s true! Why? Well if you close one eye you’ll see that you’ll see less. This video from kotaku explains it better. Skip to around the 1:20 mark. http://kotaku.com/5784870/watch-how-3d-on-nintendos-3ds-can-make-you-a-better-gamer

i really want to get into it, just comes with far too many drawbacks!
first of the medical issues, so many eye specialists saying it rots your optic nerve, and can seriously damage your eye sight.
    and destroy your depth perception.
which would explain why i suddenly have allot of trouble reading things up close.
not to mention allot of people getting sick from it.
then theres the picture quality it ruins.
it makes everything so dark, its like your playing your game with 20 pairs of sunglasses on!
thats why i refuse to use it, it just makes a awesome looking game look bad.
so bad in fact nvidia have had to release new glasses, and monitor manufactures new monitors, to try eliminate this.
which has not really worked, and has pissed off allot of people because of the little time it just started.
cant blame them, dropping 200 on the glasses and receiver, then 800 on the monitor, to only have it replaced in a few years?
    that sucks!

then theres the lack of effects.
thats whats disappointing me the most, if we had pop out and depth like what avatar the movie offered then i would put up with the dark image.
but we dont, the most pop out ive ever seen is from motorstorm 3D rift where the rocks and smoke slightly overflow from the screen.
they dont come flying out to your face like movies, just slightly out of the screen maybe a inch or 2.
thats whats killing it the most for me.
you have to put up with uncomfortable glasses, darker worse image, and for what?
    a small depth addition?
    not really worth it!

if im going to spend 100 bucks, then i expect 100 bucks worth of value.
thats the problem with 3D ATM, it requires you to sacrifice so much, and in return its giving you so little.
it asks for change for 100, then gives you 20.
once they fix the darkness issues, and bring the depth and pop out to avatar levels, then ill be all over it!
    till then no thanks!

Thanks for all the opinions, guys! That’s what TC is all about. I personally, like I said earlier, am not into 3D and I don’t think I’ll be swayed either….plus with all what you guys have said with eye strain and other health issues, I think I’ll pass.

  11. foxton February 22, 2012 at 7:50 am -

Couldnt agree with you more @Paul, I feel that alot of games are using it as a sales gimmick and not throwing everything into it. Im hopeful that it will stick around, afterall it can only get better! But like i said, if you really wanna play a game that uses the 3d capability to its best then download top darts from the psn. This is the only game ive seen so far that the images actually pop out of the screen instead of going in and giving it more depth!!

  12. Ernice Gilbert February 22, 2012 at 7:52 am -

@Foxton: But bro, I don’t want to play that game! I want to play my shooters – my Uncharteds, my CODs, my Battlefields in full HD, then and only then will I give the tech a chance…. Other than that, I think I’ll sit it out.

  13. foxton February 22, 2012 at 9:54 am -

Yeah i here you bro, but this game shows that the capability is there, It can only get better and if game devs are prepared to spend the tima and effort on 3d they can make it really work. Its not at that standard now, but if 3D sticks around and grows then it will come. Just needs time :)

  14. Ernice Gilbert February 22, 2012 at 9:59 am -

I agree with you on that. Let’s see what happens. I wonder what PS4 and 720 will do for the tech? Hmm…

  15. nick February 22, 2012 at 10:06 am -

your mind will be changed once you see the
    HMZT1

  16. Ernice Gilbert February 22, 2012 at 10:07 am -

Oh you mean the new thing from Sony? Yeah, I’ve been looking at that, but I heard it’ll cost a pretty penny.

  17. foxton February 22, 2012 at 10:11 am -

well i think we just answered wether 3d gaming will last, if they accomodate 3D on next gen consoles i think it will be a sucuess, however if they dont then its dead!

  18. Ernice Gilbert February 22, 2012 at 10:12 am -

“If they accomodate 3D on next gen consoles i think it will be a sucuess, however if they dont then its dead!” – You’re dead on, there, bro. Dead on.

  19. nick February 22, 2012 at 10:15 am -

    its not too bad actually.
it replaces a TV so i was expecting over 1K, but its 899 here releases march 20.
for once a $ony device actually priced pretty well!
they have a competition for AU fans to win 2 of these!
hope i win, id be so cool roaming around the house with alien headgear!

  20. Ernice Gilbert February 22, 2012 at 10:17 am -

How do you mean it doubles as a TV? The last time checked it was this Alien-looking device that weighs heavy on your head: http://www.footluxe.com/gallery/2011/09/Sony-3D-glasses-HMZT1-01.jpg

  21. nick February 22, 2012 at 10:29 am -

replaces a TV for me, all i use mine for is playing games.
i stopped watching TV when all the free to air channels showed the same episode of each show 5 times a week, and spend each 30 minute slot for each show 20 minutes of that is for ads.
and foxtel is a freaking rip off!
and does the same, family guy for instance they had the epp when you wish apon a wienstein 3 times within 24 hours.
so many epps out there, they cant choose 3 different ones within 24 hours?

  22. Ernice Gilbert February 22, 2012 at 10:37 am -

I tell, AU’s really something else. Still wanna visit Sydney!

  23. Ernesto22 February 22, 2012 at 8:13 pm -

Ooh, that sony headset thing is pretty cool. Since it’s two different screens for each eye there is no flicker, no dimming, and no ghosting. One more thing, 3D actually improves vision. It is especially helpful for people suffering from amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed-eyes). The eye strain you guys mention isn’t really because of 3D itself. We see in 3D all the time. Instead, it is due to various things such as flicker, ghosting, or just plain bad filming.
