Square On Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts III, And Versus XIII

squeenix

For years I’ve religiously followed the bread crumb trail that is Kingdom Hearts III and Versus XIII, and now after six years of questions and assumptions, square-enix finally speaks.

Where is Kingdom Hearts III? Where the heck is Versus XIII? And why haven’t we seen a Final Fantasy VII remake? Those were the three questions that nearly every Square Enix representative was asked during CES 2012

They wanted to remain anonymous for very specific reasons…but they spoke. Some answers you may like. Others you most definitely will not. But there were answers.

The info on Kingdom Hearts III
As a gamer who grew up with Kingdom Hearts, I’ve been waiting for an official third entry since elementary school. And I’m talking 5th and 6th grade (shows how young I am) . The series tugged on the ol’ heartstrings, and featured an ending that left us wanting more. So where is Kingdom Hearts III?

It’s coming. And from the same team that’s developing Versus XIII.

“Kingdom Hearts III will happen,” said an anonymous Square Enix developer. “It may be several years from now, but it’s going to happen. Once we finish Versus XIII and rest from that, we will start on Kingdom Hearts III.”

Many Gamers responded on multiple forums “six years right?”

In return square representatives said, “yes, most likely.”

The info on Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Yes, it’s coming. When? Not sure.

When rumors of a Japan-only release spread across the Web, many fans became skeptical. Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been in the works for several years–E3 2006, if you want to get technical. However, not much more information was given when inquired about the much-awaited title.

“It’s definitely coming, not to worry,” said a member of the testing team, “I get e-mails about it every now and then that definitely tells me it’s coming to America. It might be a few years, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

The info on a Possible Final Fantasy VII Remake
This is the question that Square Enix dodged with the grace of a matador. Not a single person from the team gave an official answer about the likelihood a Final Fantasy VII remake so, instead, gamers asked for their honest opinions on how they’d personally feel about remaking the beloved game.

“I’m on the fence about it,” said a developer who wanted to keep a low profile. “I’d love to see it, but at the same time I wouldn’t. It wouldn’t be the same, and wouldn’t have the same magic. It’d have voices, and what about the cross dressing part? And what about Aerith’s death? Would we see that in full next-gen graphics? I don’t think I could handle that.”

“I honestly don’t believe that people truly understand Final Fantasy VII. I think if they went back and played it today, they wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as they did before,” said another dev. “That might not be the case for all Final Fantasy VII fans, but I think a lot of people need to let it go and accept it for what it is.”

The Wrap Up
It was comforting hearing that Versus XIII is still coming down the pipe, and that Kingdom Hearts III will follow. Eventually. It’s been a long time coming, but let’s hope that Square Enix uses the opportunity to perfect and polish these titles into games that its base will enjoy (another FF XIII we do not need). As for the Final Fantasy VII remake that the masses demand…don’t hold your breath, friends. Looks like it may not happen anytime soon.

    A COUPLE OF YEARS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
come on $E its been announced for 6 freaking years already!
at this rate there going to be stealing DNFs crown!
lets hope it does not have the same ending………
as for KH3 its good news i was starting to think they had totally lost interest in it!
i cant understand why all titles since 2 have been restricted to handhelds, i mean yea the DS and PSP are ridiculously popular in japan, and thats where these titles sell best, but come on you cant tell me no one in japan has a ps3!
im willing to bet my nuts that KH birth by sleep would of sold as well, if not better if it was a ps3 exclusive and not PSP!

Gutted about FFVII its definately not gonna happen is it :( best game ever, and worthy of a remake, i can see what they mean about certain aspects of the game, it would be strange hearing them speak and certain scenes would be different, it would be rather like reading a book and having an amazing impression of it, and then seeing a film of that book and being really dissapointed (all of the Harry potters spring to mind!)
I think the main isssue is probably that they just couldnt afford the man hours to do it? and also so much would be expected of it they would have to make sure they did the best job possible. I feel it would be a gamble they not prepared to take. It would be a guranteed best seller (poss of all time?) but if it failed to live up to the hype (and there would be plenty of that) what could potentially be the biggest game of all time could effectively ruin them!
Its just too big a risk for them, but absolutley gutted.

@Foxton: Very thoughtful comment. I think that game would sell 30 million units…seriously. EVERYBODY I know wants a remake, but you’re right, it’s indeed a big risk for SE.

yeah it would be HUGE! all my mates who switched from ps1′s to xbox’s (and theres a few of them) all of them have said they would buy a ps3 (or 4 lol) just for this game.
