Year In Review: Five Biggest Flops Of 2011

Would you believe that ALL of the biggest flops of 2011 were shooters? I’m proud of that, too. Because developers need to bring new IPs to the market, instead of trying to copy COD. Maybe the epic flops of 2011 will teach them a lesson.

5 – Brink:

Brink was supposed to be something cool, but somewhere, somehow, something went wrong. The title was not necessarily bad, it just didn’t live up to expectations. Splash Damage had hoped to change the industry with this one, but in the end, it was the industry that winded up changing the game and its aspirations. It sold less than 900,000.

4 -Bulletstorm:

Ah, yes. Bulletstorm. The game from Epic Games-owned developer People Can Fly. The shooter was supposed to be this fun, over-the-top title and it was! Thing is, people simply didn’t warm up to it. In fact, we scored the game high around these parts, as did most other publications, but in the end, gamers didn’t want a bullestorm filled with vulgar language and stupid jokes. It failed hard, selling what, 1 million across all platforms? If that many.

4 – Homefront:

Homefront is one of the biggest flops we’ve seen on so many levels. THQ bet the farm of the game, spending unprecedented amounts of cash on advertising, trying to sell a B game as a triple A title. The hype was there, but the gamer enthusiasm wasn’t. The game scored bad all about, forcing THQ to shut down Kaos Studios after it became apparent the shooter had flopped.

2 – RAGE:

What makes RAGE such a big flop is that id Software, the inventors of the first-person shooter genre, and creators of DOOM were behind it! The game reviewed well, but again gamers simply didn’t warm up to it. It failed. It failed hard. And you’d think that legendary coders like id Software would have their act together. Bad show, bad show, boys. Less than 1 million sold across platforms.

1 – Resistance 3:

The biggest flop of 2011 is Resistance 3. What started life as a must-have PS3 game, has become one of legend. Resistance: Fall of Man captured the PS3 gamer and decided never to let him go….until Resistance 2 came along and spoiled the entire show by changing EVERYTHING that made the franchise great. It’s no wonder fans complained vehemently, and when the third and last title came out, no one bought it: Resistance 3, so far, has sold less than 800,000 copies. The first game sold over 3 million. That’s the epitome of taking something good and sending it to hell.

Resistance 3 is awesome, i cant say the same for the others

Rage is also a great game, however i think it suffered massively by th fact it was released at the same time of heavy weight games such as COD, BF3, FIFA 12.
The graphics were jaw dropping and the gameplay was acceptable. However the online play was were it was really let down, what an utter dissapointment. I keep meaning to pick this game back up and finish it but every time i put it in my ps3 i think sod it and stick BF3 or FIFA on instead. And that ultimately sums it up as to why i think it failed.

i wouldent call bulletstorm, resistance 3 and rage flops.
isent it funny how the most “different” games just happen to be the worst selling?
this is exactly what is KILLING the industry!
developers release photo copy after photo copy after photo copy and it sells millions!
games that try to do things a little differently, ala resistance 3, bulletstorm and rage, sell poorly.
    sigh.
as i was saying in the previous article developers use to look to the market and make a game that had not been done before.
now they do the total opposite, and this is EXACTLY why!
and that is whats killing the industry!
at this rate were going to have nothing but COD knockoffs and we have no one but ourselves to blame!

We won’t have COD knockoffs if shooters keep flopping. But I don’t believe trying something different is bad…I mean this list only includes shooters! That’s not different.
