Consoles Are Doomed To Fail – Richard Garriott

See that shiny box you have sitting underneath your HDTV? Yep. That very one. It, and all its predecessors are bound to fail, says Ultima creator Richard Garriott. According to him, smartphones and tablets will take over.

He also contended that console games development is just too expensive while games for smartphones and tablets only cost a fraction of the former’s budget.

“I think we might get one more generation,might, but I think fundamentally they’re doomed,” Garriott Industry Gamers.

“I think fundamentally the power that you can carry with you in a portable is really swamping what we’ve thought of as a console.”

Nintendo’s announced its Wii U for a launch next year, plus Sony and Microsoft are said to be working tirelessly on PS4 and Xbox 720.

i hope its not underneath!
every time i go on youtube to look for YLOD fixes i almost have a heart attack when i see ps3s in closed cabinets.
earth to morons, of course your ps3 is going to overheat if you put it in a closed space!
gee, its like putting hay ontop of a electric fire then wondering why your house burnt down……..
anyway back on topic.
hes right, kinda, but for the wrong reasons.
its not that handheld devices will surpass tech in consoles, that will never happen!
consoles will become obsolete because of the cloud gaming services like onlive.
by the time the next gen consoles are finished, ISPs should be up to date and having services like onlive should be the norm.
why go spend 500 bucks on every new system, for every new exclusive, so that could mean 1500 bucks for the big 3 $ony, ninty and M$, when you could just use a micro console, or something built into your TV?
obviously there wont be one micro console to support all the games, the big 3 will probably each have there own proprietary device to make sure only there device can play there games.
but obviously they will cost a fraction of what todays console would.
the days of customers willing to invest in 500 dollar consoles is over.
and so is the days of manufactures investing hundreds of millions of dollars.
there just not willing to spend hundreds of millions of bucks R&D and manufacturing, and advertising, and shipping consoles out, and who knows when you get that money back.
IF you get that money back!
thats why services like onlive are so tantalizing now, but problem now is ISPs are not up to spec.
too slow, and too low download usages.
by the time next gen consoles are to be replaced though that should not be a issue, so why go with expensive new consoles when you can massively cut your costs, and have a much higher install base?
