Activision has announced what we all expected: assive numbers from Modern Warfare 3. The game has sold 6.5 million units within its first 24hrs in the U.S. and UK, amassing for the publisher $400 million day one revenues.
The $400 million day one sales make Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer’s efforts the third consecutive year that Call of Duty managed to outsell its predecessors by vast amounts, with Modern Warfare 3 outdoing Black Ops day one sales by nearly 1 million units.
Black Ops sold 5.6 million units in 2010 when it made $360 million in its first day, compared to Modern Warfare 2 which sold 4.7 million and made $310 million when it released in 2009.
According to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, Life-to date (LTD) sales of Call of Duty “exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.
“Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row,” Kotick added.
“Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere,” said Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg.
“I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”
Modern Warfare 3 is now on sale worldwide for PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii. The latter port was handled by Black Ops developer Treyarch.
