Sony’s PlayStation 3 has been out for over 5 years, and many developers have lauded the console for its raw power and other capabilities. But Vigil Games, the developer of upcoming triple-A title Darksiders II, has said the console “is a pain in the ass to work on”, and that they’re forced to do “wacky stuff to store memory”.
It was the studio’s Marvin Donald, game director for Darksiders II who made clear the situation, adding he’s not an engineer, but he hear about it all the time.
“It’s a pain in the ass to work on,” he told Eurogamer. “Five years later, getting used to it? That means it’s a pain in the ass.
“I’m not an engineer, but I hear about it all the time. We have to do wacky stuff with the way we manage memory.”
Donald went on to explain the cause of Vigil’s pain, and it has to do with memory.
“Even as an artist, it’s like, OK, my textures are too big, I’m in trouble because I checked in something that’s making the 360 crash because it’s a 20×48 when it really should just be a 10×24, or even smaller.
“But on the PlayStation 3, the assets go into different categories, and if one of those categories becomes too bloated it’ll crash the system. It’s a little bit more sensitive on the PS3 in that regard. There are some things you just can’t do, or you have to do differently. Yeah, it’s a pain.”
It’s been rumored on numerous occasions that PS4 is around the bend, but will Sony do things different in terms of architecture remains to be seen. Vigil, however, is taking a wait-and-see approach.
“They have to do things their way,” Donald said. “Somebody over there is going to think it’s better. And it’s really just different, which makes it a pain for everyone to port games back and forth. But, whatever. We’ll see.”
Darksiders II is due a release on PC, Xbox 360, Wii U and PS3 next year. It’s to be noted that Donald wasn’t implying in any way the PC, Wii U and Xbox 360 versions of the game will be better than PS3′s.

thats cool too bad no one buys your games
I hope this donald a-hole reads this (im sure he would appear a decent guy then you get to know him and find out how messed up he is in the long run just like my dad
could of told you that years ago, devs have been saying that since it released!
the problem is sony are asians, and this is not racist this is just how they are.
there like the french, they love being different and difficult.
they think the way they do things is the best, and they will always go out of there way to do things differently.
my car for examples french, now i have been installing car stereo systems as a hobby/ weekend job for years, but my car took me easily 5 times longer, and a hell of allot more swearing just to get the old kit out let alone getting the new one in!
id love to believe that sony will make the ps4 more developer friendly, but there asian, they wont.
