DICE Tries To Put End To Battlefield 3 Controversy, Sends One Last Message To Gamers

by Ernice Gilbert on June 20th, 2011, under EA, FPS, Hot, News, PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Last Thursday on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon was supposed to be a time of jubilee for DICE, the makers of Battlefield 3, and gamers alike. But what first was an awesome show, turned into a controversy between console and PC fans, with certain PS3 owners expressing disappointment with the quality of the PS3 footage shown on the show. Even Xbox 360 was brought in the mix and DICE has rarely said anything concerning said platform.

DICE’s Rendering Architect Johan Andersson has had enough. He’s about to stop talking about the game in full on twitter, but before he leaves, one last message must be relayed.

“To reaffirm, we are optimizing #bf3 for _all_ platforms to take advantage of their resp. strengths & create an awesome shooter experience,” he said on twitter.

Andersson was really put off by an article from Examiner titled: “DICE Favoring Xbox on Consoles After Cursing Out PS3 Fans”. In fact, Andersson was so displeased with the thread, he expressed it through a tweet: Omg, he didn’t even post the tweet I was replying to. sigh.”

To close, the developer said he’ll be taking a hiatus from talking Battlefield 3 on twitter, adding: “I love talking directly to gamers, but too many troll journalists out there so think I’ll have to shut up about #bf3 details for now, bye.”

Hopefully this puts an end to the controversy.

What’s your opinion of all this

  2. Mon, 20th Jun 2011 at 6:39 pm

I don’t know what to say. I do think the Examiner piece is a bit out there, and I do understand where Andersson is coming from. He also must realize that media feeds on “important” people and what they say. As for the gamers making a fuss, again, DICE said in the past that the game would look the same across all platforms, something that’s obviously not possible, nevertheless some PS3 owners were expecting on par visuals alongside PC. DICE should have been clear from the get-go. Also, they’ve been advertising the game like a PC exclusive, showing us only PC footage up until Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last Thursday, so both sides are to blame.

What’s you guys take on the situation?

  4. Mon, 20th Jun 2011 at 10:09 pm

I think it’s more of the consumers fault then DICES, its common sense to know a ps3 or suckbox cant run pc games sure one person on dices team said something stupid i say stupid things and people understand the genral idea of what i ment

Point taken. So what do you say to EA and DICE who’ve been promoting the game like it was a PC exclusive for so long?

  6. Mon, 20th Jun 2011 at 10:43 pm

I think they are just promoting their lead platform for the game. Activision does the same thing with COD. They push footage of console versions (mostly xbox because it works best on their and almost feels like it should be exclusive), and never shows PC versions until it is released and you see videos of how bad it plays on PC on youtube. I have nothing against what DICE has been doing, but they should have been a little clearer. Most people should know that the PC version will look much better, but they do not always or they just want to complain; so they should have just stated that the console version will not look as good and they should have not left anything up in the air for people to complain about.

I’m sure next time around DICE will be sure to clarify…

people dont understand DICE ARE A PC DEVELOPER!
thats why they were only showing PC footage for a while, especially because of the way PC fans have been treated the past few years and how DICE gave them the middle finger with BFBC1.
they wanted to come out of the gate and prove to people BF3 is a PC game at heart, then its out there for everyone else, but its a PC game being made for modern PCs.
they should be thanked for not being so tight a$$ed and giving us who have paid thousands for our PCs a game to finally push them!
not condemned because people have no freaking common sense!
this is EXACTLY why developers are always so quiet and reserved with there games, because people bitch and whine about it like its the end of the world!
people are complaining that they took this long to show off console footage, but WTF did they expect?
if they react like this now, how would of they reacted if it was shown off at start and looked half as good?
PCs the lead platform, so of course your always going to be showing off your best foot!
people always are asking why are developers so secretive, why dont they release more info, show more, give out demos that are shown at conventions.
the reason why is because people dont understand what demo/ beta means!
there bitching on how this looks, when the bloody things still got 3 or so months in development!
they complain that so littles announced, but when something is announced and turns out to be false the shit hits the fan!
the PSN outage a prime example people were demanding a come back date, then getting the gallows ready when the date was missed.
if i had a cent for every 5Mth time someones complained oh you lied to us you said this would be out last week!
sometimes unforeseeable circumstances appear theres nothing you can do about that!
to be honest in the future i can see only a select group of journalists being alowed to preview games, and no more previews being sent out if you want to preview a game you have to go to the developers.
no more E3 and that, simply because if somethings promised but not delivered the gallows are wheeled out!
    its ridiculous!

poor developers cant show of there games without the media twisting there words, and gamers hurling crap at them!
as the saying goes, damned if you do, damned if you dont!
    its pathetic!
it would be interesting to see what davids take on this is, because hes had many a journalist twist his words and he threw the spade at them!
poor developers cant show of there game without people jumping down there throats!

“Even Xbox 360 was brought in the mix and DICE has rarely said anything concerning said platform.”

Mr. gilbert, please stop using ‘said’.

It’s a stupid intertet’isum that’s gotten more and more common the past couple of years. For one, saying ‘said’ twice in the sentence. And 2, no one talks like that.

When people make a a reference then refer back to it with ‘said’ it’s stuipd geek talk spoken by those who think they’re talking propper. Like when people miscorrectly use “no one was left in the building except ‘such and such’ and I” When you are supposed to say, “such and such and me”

Stop referenceing to what you said in a previous sentence, or even the same damn sentence with ‘said’! you sound like a 1940′s contract.

It’s not cool, you all sound like dorks.

you think true call of duty sold so many copies in billions actually, so i dont think battlefield will ever reach that mark in the first week since everytime i sign in to my psn and xbox everyones playing call of duty blacks ops and modern warfare 2 i seem to be the only one play battlefield 2 even though activision has been srewing us over for the xbox we really dont care any more some the point of this is that BF3 wont take over the shooting genre like call of duty but making it good only for the pc just shows that they aren’t trying to be the best so i guess im going to buy MW3 even doe it looks the same and Bf3 looks way better my friends are going to buy MW3 since the only thing BF3 looks real good on is the Pc and online players im sticking to MW3

@GTboy: Battlefield 3 will sell lots yes, but MW3 is a whole other beast.
