Portal 2 Will Get “Full” Steam Experience On PS3

by Ernice Gilbert on April 13th, 2011, under EA, Hot, News, PC, PS3, Xbox 360

If there were ever big news breaking today, it’d be the announcement that the PS3 and PC versions of Portal 2 are going to be intrinsic, meaning the game will provide cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements. Now that’s big news.

The PS3 version of Portal 2 will have Steam Overlay just like the PC version. The benefit of overlay is that it gives you access to both PSN and Steam friends. It will display their in-game or online status and will provide a route to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites.

Steam achievements are earned in tandem with PSN trophies and are also accessible via the Steam overlay.

Also, Portal 2 will be Steam Cloud-enabled, and will save both co-op game progress and single-player play remotely, which means you’ll be able to continue your game from where you left off on any PS3 anywhere in the world.

You’ll be required to link your PSN account with a Steam account, which is done within the game. That’s for the PS3 version, of course.

A Steam user can login to an existing account, and new accounts are easily created.

None of vast amount of functionalities will be available on the Xbox 360 version of the game because of Xbox Live restrictions, so it’s definitely looking like the PS3′s Portal 2 is the best to get.

Portal 2′s out next week.

will be interesting to see if more games adopt this.
