The Battle Is On: COD vs BF3 Marketing To Cost Over $200 Million Says EA

Clash Of The Titans? No. Too small – step aside. Clash of the gaming gods? Yes indeed. Activison’s Call of Duty is the number one game in the industry at the moment, but EA’s coming hard at it with DICE’s Battlefield 3. In fact, the war is so big that over $200 million dollars will be spent advertising those two titles alone.

It’s on.

EA boss John Riccitiello uttered the big talk at the Ad Age Conference in New York, while talking of the impending war between its DICE-developed BF3 and the next entry in Activision’s diehard FPS brand.

“This November we’re launching Battlefield 3. It’s going up against the next Call of Duty, which is presently the number one game in the industry – a game that last year did $400 million in revenue on day one,” he said.

“This game is designed to take that game down. If you’re looking for a battle of the titans – Red Sox vs Yankees… Microsoft or Google – and what the tip-off point is for this holiday season, this is it.

There will be a couple of hundred million dollars of marketing against these two products going head to head. Similar designs – we think we’ve got the better product – it’s going to be a blast.”

Big talk from the EA boss as expected. But to take down Call of Duty, my friend, you’ll need more than just big talk and advertising money. You’ll need a massive luck and something else.

I don’t know what it is just yet – but you’ll definitely need something else. Rum maybe? I dunno.

Agreed. From what I”m seeing it’s looking like BF3 will be better. But then again we haven’t seen nothing from MW3 – so you never know. It’ll be two big games that’s for sure.

Think they should have released in October instead? Me too.

    of course!
releasing in the same month as COD is suicide!
if COD releases when it normally does it will put BF3 in the same week, thats triple suicide!
theres allot of games coming in october, more then november, but at least theres no war games like COD releasing.
people are only going to be playing one in november, and 99% will be on the COD train.
thats one thing i have never understood, i have seen so many people bitch and constantly hate on COD, but then play it for months!
a friend of mine from TAFE is constantly saying how black ops was the worst game in the year to release, but every time his ps3 is on his playing that game!
