Anonymous Takes Down PlayStation.com And Sony.com, More Attacks To Come (Update)

by Ernice Gilbert on April 4th, 2011, under Hot, News, Sony

Update: Sony’s just tweeted that PSN will be experience downtime throughout the day because of the hackers attack, saying downtime will be rather sporadic:

“PSN currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Original Story: As promised via a threatening message today, hacker group Anonymous have taken down two of Sony’s flagship sites: PlayStation.com and Sony.com. The PSN site’s also giving problems with the hackers claiming that PSN, and other Sony sites coming next.

Things just got nasty.

The message sent this morning says: “Congratulations, Sony. You now have now received the undivided attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal action against our follow hackers, Geohot and Graf_Chokolo, has not only alarmed us, it has been deemed wholly unforgivable.”

And that’s just part of it. Now PlayStation.com and sony.com are going up and down as Sony coders and hackers fight a cyber war in spectacular movie fashion.

The hackers involved in the attack have dubbed it “OpSony”, and are asking other hackers to “crash all server of sony please”.

Sonypictures.co.uk and sony-europe.com are still up but are also targets. Some believe the attacks to be DDOS related or denial of service attack, in which a multitude of compromised systems attack a single target, thereby causing denial of service for users of the targeted system. The flood of incoming messages to the target system essentially forces it to shut down, thereby denying service to the system to legitimate users.

More as this breaking news unfolds.

Thanks, PSLS.
