‘Don’t read into the hype‘, some say, ‘Killzone 3 is just like any other shooter on the market‘. ‘You run and you gun, but that’s about it‘.
Such lies. If there ever was a lie detector test going around testing journalists on the truth about Killzone 3, many would fail miserably.
See, some can’t get around the fact that it’s not Call of Duty or Halo, or Battlefield. Some just don’t want to see the game excel, while others, well, they have their reasons, as far fetched as they might be. But I’m here to set the record straight today, as I’ve been playing KZ3′s multiplayer for quite some time, and have beaten the single player more than once.
I would pay to see this article on the front page of many an aggregate site, because I think too many PS3 owners are missing out on some of the best online gaming available exclusively for them. My friends, Killzone 3 is the best fun you’ll have in a shooter on any platform, and below the break, I back up all this smoke with some blazing fire.
Shut Up And Play – Wazone Style
It’s a war, you didn’t know? Yes it is. This isn’t some random deathmatch mode where you kill or be killed, running around card box built stages with PS2-era graphics. No. Warzone is packed with action and different missions all in one game. You’ll capture and hold, you’ll then have to assassinate someone. Later, search and destroy, search and retrieve and that’s just for starters.
There are huge mechs you can jump in and annihilate your foes. Jetpacks are made available affording you to rain terror from on high. 12vs12 in an all out, no holes barred match up. If you’re good, you’ll earn massive kill points, leaving a match with over a hundred kills on occasions. Perform well and you’ll be treated to various ribbons, enhancing your ability to take down the enemy.
The Best Looking Console Game, We Say
Oh my, the visuals in KZ3 are so spectacular that I sometimes die gazing at the devastatingly beautiful scenery. From the ocean to the ravaged industrialized locations, from Stahl’s abode to the Helghan jungle – it’s just all so beautiful. Thing is, the multiplayer enjoys the same fidelity as the single player mode, adding even more immersion to your online experience.
After playing KZ3′s MP, Call of Duty: Black Ops felt like rubbish. I don’t mean this in a bad way at all. I hope the next COD title surprises us all, but man, everything about Killzone 3 is just so polished.
Operations - A Revolution
Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Domination and the rest were all industry changing ideas when they first came on the scene. But I’m tired of the same ole same ole, and apparently, judging by the new game mode Guerrilla Games created for Killzone 3, my prayer was answered.
Operations, I think, has raised the bar when it comes to online play. The rewards system in that mode is simply the most innovative to date. In the mode, there are objectives to be completed, and the players who perform the best are featured in cutscenes depicting their success. Nothing like it.
No other game on the market offers this – but we’re hoping the trend goes way beyond Killzone 3.
The game’s wide open, there’s freedom to do what you feel, an array of weapons, and a wide list of classes to choose from:
Engineer
Tactician
Infiltrator
Field Medic
Marksman
All of which gives your the tools needed to own the battlefield. Of course there’s Guerrilla Warfare for those who are into straight out Team Deathmatch, so no one’s left behind.
You’ll play for hours without noticing and will have a hard time saying goodnight to the game. You’ll build a solid roster of like-minded friends that are not afraid to get online for a quick match every now and then. You’ll find that going back to other shooters will be a very hard task, and in the end, you’ll conclude that Killzone 3 is a class apart.
Best freaking shooter I’ve played. Ever.
If you don’t have the game, go out and buy it now. A Games Thirst online meetup is happening this weekend. Details incoming.

the ability of on the fly game modes was a really good addition to KZ2s MP, i was really hoping they would of added some new game types to that.
KZ3s just too much like KZ2 to me, yea they have the mission based mode but thats almost the same as the rest, with the objectives always being the same either defend or destroy something.
i was really hoping they would add a co-op mode like R2 and uncharted 2 had.
the treasure mode in uncharted 2 is some of the best fun ive had in ages!
the co-op mode in resistance 2 is still the best online mode ever invented!
joining up with 7 other friends, and kicking some chimera a$$ is serious fun!
cant believe they cut that from resistance 3, i mean the co-op mode was the only reason i held onto R2!
KZ3 was too much of a rehash, they needed to add and change things but they more just tweaked them.
not enough of a change to entice people back onto the series, if your like me and sick of KZ2s MP mode then you will be sick of KZ3s because its almost the same.
i wish they did something a little more drastic and differentiate it from its predecessor.
vehicles and jetpacks were a nice addition, but there really unbalanced.
both are too powerful!
thats one of the biggest complaints GG got from the closed beta last year, cant believe they have not changed it!
the guns on the jetpack and mech are WAY overpowered!
i wish insomniac would get with developers and get them to use the dual log in mode they use in R2.
cant believe its been out for almost 3 years and still no game uses it!
that was one of the most requested features for R2, and everyone loved it!
being able to invite friends over and not only play split screen, but be able to sign into your own account and play online together each leveling up your own character!
why has no game included that since?
twisted metal seriously needs that!
KZ3s MP was a missed opportunity!
they could of done something new and different with it, but all they did was serve up KZ2s MP with a coat of veneer over it!
With all your complaints – you’ve said nothing positive, yet KZ3′s mp stands as the most definitive fun I’ve had playing a shooter, and I’ve played many….
because they could of done so much more with it.
if your releasing a new game you cant take the game add 1 new feature and release it.
what would happen if a car manufacture released a new model of a car, and it was exactly the same as the model it replaces except it has one addition?
as i said before if you did not like KZ2s MP, or am bored of it you have no reason to hop onto KZ3s.
you cant release a new game with rehashed MP!
The mp is not rehashed, Nick. There were many additions, and stuff they’d done different. Not like there’s much innovations in other shooters anyway. And I don’t hear you crying foul for Crysis 2′s mp which, in many ways, is just like COD’s.
I loved KZ2 and reading this article is making me wish i had bought KZ3 instead of Homefront.
But hey you gotta support the new IPs ….yay for me…(goes into corner and weeps)
LOL…comment on the week right there…: )
Even with all its little (and bigger) bugs, I absolutely love this game! What a great way to get my feet wet in the online shooter genre. Graphics to die for, many, many MP games to choose from, and gratifying melee scenes. Hopefully the next server-side fix on 3/28 will fix the remaining bugs.
Agreed. Happy to had played with you the other day, Rabid, and this is just the beginning… We’re planning a tournament this weekend! Updates coming soon.
Ernic how much GG they paying you to write this? I feel that killzone 3 is the most dissapointing MP game around. By the sounds of your write up you either clearly havent played Killzone 2 or just chose to ignore it. I was hugely dissapointed with the overall package, yeah the graphics are unbeliveable but come on, it all boils down to game play and lastibility of which i feel this has very little of. I was a huge huge fan of killzone 2. Was in the top 200 overall out of nearly 2million registered users,(something you cant get on kz3) and accumlated of 1300 hours of online play so i think i no wat im talking about!
KZ3 has just gone backwards in so many ways, the stats, the xp acumulation, the scoring system, the clan system, the fact you cant meet up with your online mates so easily, the list is endless. You are so restricted in what you can do. One of the best points of Killzone 2 was you could tweak it to how you wanted to play it, you could change the length of missions, exclude certain weapons and maps were available on all types not just certain mission types! I bought Killzone 2 the week it came out, i played it regularly and hardcore week in week out untill Kz3 came out. I waited for nearly 2 years with baited breath for its release, cued up at midnight for the release and felt like crying when i played it. Yeah id played the open beta so was expecting it but it was still such a let down. Ive now gone back to KZ2 just like 85% of my freinds list. Im still playing it hardcore after two years. Killzone 3 lasted 2 weeks. The patch updates have failed to improve it and come friday the game i had waited for so longily will be back on the shelf attracting a 2nd hand price just like tens of thousands of copies around the country.
Those are some great points, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally do not have a preference for the kz games. I like 3 and i like 2, but if you are a hardcore player, like yourself, I see how it can become frustrating. I play kz, but not hardcore like you do. Now, I can relate to you though. I played Gears of War super hardcore when the xbox came. In fact, it is the only game I played for a while. I have around 2000 hours played, and I was so disappointed in Gears 2 that I went back to Gears 1, much like you did with kz. Now, this is just an opinion piece and that is his opinion. Some will agree, and some will disagree, just like me and Gears 2. Some will say it is better and some will not. It is all just personal preference, and he decided to write about why he likes kz3 the most. I would have to say that kz is not even my favorite mp game on ps3, but rather Uncharted 2. Now, some will not agree with me, but it is still my preference. You clearly love kz2 and make some great points as to why, and he loves kz3 for the points he pointed out. So you do not have to go the whole route of asking how much GG paid him to write this. It is an opinion piece and his opinion is that kz3 is best to him. I do not agree, and you do not agree because we have different opinions, but that is no reason to ask how much a company is paying him to say that, when it is his honest opinion.
Ok josh Chill out, it was merely a joke. I am aware that we are all entitled to an opinion and im sorry if my words came accross that Ernice was wrong, that was not my intention. I feel strongly and bitterly dissapointed with KZ3 and felt that maybe he hadnt played kz2 because if you came into kz3 blind yeah you would probably rate it an excellent game. To me its how you develop and improve from game to game and that is what you will be judged on, you compare terminator 2 to the 1st terminator dont you not to robocop2!
GG has let down all the hardcore Killzone 2 fans, the fans that made the Killzone franchise what it was and gave them the springboard to allow them to develop Kz3 with the budget, hype and anticipation around it all. Personally i feel that they have ignored the cries of the KZ2 players to try and tap into the lucrative COD market, the change in scoring system and xp development backs this theory up. I know im not alone in this thought, any of my PSN friends list will agree with me and all you have to do is look at the threads on the kz2 forum (which is now convinently well hidden on the kz website!)
Yes this is opinion and you all wont agree with me, but i feel that KZ3 is basking in the glory of a fascade when really its one of the most dissapointing games this year, just go into any game shop and count the number of 2nd hand kz3 copies for sale and you will realise.
i am not angry or anything. Sorry if it came across that way. I was just explaining. It is sometimes hard to explain something in words because the tone does not always come across in the way you expect. Sorry if i sound frustrated or angry. I was trying to sound that way. I am sure you were joking, but sometimes people put that down and are not joking. It is hard to tell sometimes because the tone in which a person writes does not always reflect what they are really trying to say.
It is funny how similar our situations are when it comes to a game. I had the same experience with Gears 2. I went into a store about 3 weeks after the release of Gears 2 and there were like 20 used copies.
hey josh my point exactly
your right its hard to see what sort of tone you are writing in, hence thats why my joke about GG paying Ernice didnt come accross well. its cool not angry either, well maybe with GG lol
lol, I am little angry with Epic.
So I did play Kilzone 2′s mp, and although I agree with many of your points, I still think Killzone 3′s multiplayer has gotten better. I think you’re upset because they made the controls and certain aspects of the game more COD-esque, but that, to me, isn’t a bad thing.
Killzone 3 is still uniquely Killzone 3, and I’ve played Black Ops long enough to conclude that its MP feels like rubbish compared to Guerrilla Games’ effort.
Honestly, where I think the game fails is on single player – the story to be precised. I never felt connected to what was happening, but was rather enthralled with the gameplay and beautiful scenery…
I agree about the single player, its very short and you dont feel a real part of the game, you actually feel more connected to the Helghast than the ISA and they are much more interesting. The graphics however are unreal, epsecially when your taking on the MAWLR or whatever its called. I dont agree on the MP though, the controls havent changed since kz2 but yes the COD -esqueness has really annoyed me. The whole game has had a major COD overhaul and its frustrating as you feel so restricted in what you can do, i feel dictated by the game, whereas i want to be in control. Maybe its just because i dont like change, if it aint broke dont fix it, and i think theyve tried to fix something that didnt need to be and in my opinion it has suffered from it. I used to use kz2 as a community where i could hook up and play and chat to my friends every night, bump into the same people every time i played and you really felt part of the community. Now even though i have friends online at the same time, its almost impossible to meet up with them.
I understand your frustrations, but you have to realize it’s a give and take situation.. I know you want nothing but the best for GG, so allow them to try and expand while keeping the core gameplay intact. I know exactly how you feel, but with me, I guess I”m easier to move on for change. Still, I wouldn’t give up on KZ3 because of this…give it a shot again.
yeah maybe, i just dont think the game has the lastibilty that the second one does. Im seriously considering trading in black ops and KZ3 and give crysis 2 a shot. Or succumbing to your huge gaming knowledge anything else out there i should be trying at the moment?! Oh and i added you on psn last night
i gave it another try last night, and just got frustrated with it again. Sorry i missed you, i was just finishingoff my game on premier manager! i put KZ3 on just as you were logging off! its going tomorrow, good riddance i say :p
lol! Alright then. Hopefully we’ll catch up on another game!
