Sony – PS3 Leading The 3D Charge

by Ernice Gilbert on March 22nd, 2011, under Hot, News, PS3

When you think of 3D and gaming, the first console that comes to mind is PS3. Sony knows this, and with Killzone 3 and MLB 11: The show already out showcasing the system’s capabilities, and with SOCOM 4 and Uncharted 3 on the way, the giant felt the need to put up a nice info-graphic chart, giving some rather “spicy” information? Let’s see past the break.

The chart claims over 20 percent of all Killzone 3 demo downloads were 3D, and, here’s the spicy part – “In one week, there were 83,000 downloads of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3D Experience Exclusive Sneak Peak.”

As you can see, Sony’s bragging about the 83,000 downloads of the Sports Illustrated special – but you and I both know that’s not at all surprising.

All in all, it’s good to see PS3 leading the 3D route. Here’s the question – do you think 3D’s taking hold, or is it rather a passing phase?

    neither.
3Ds here to stay now, but if its going to be adopted and become the norm theres serious improvements to be made!
i got crysis 2 last night, and the first thing i did was put my glasses away and play it in standard 2D.
    why?
because every game in 3D looks like crap compared to 3D!
you half the frame rate, the resolution normally drops below HD(so your technically playing a ps2 game!), the screen goes so dark, the colors are dimmed, and the glasses depending on the manufacture have a colored tint on them sonys being green.
hopefully by the time glasses free 3D TVs come out all these annoyances will be worked out, and games in 3D will look just as good as in 2D.
another thing they need to work on is the options.
allot of games have the intensity, and a on off switch.
    thats it!
    wheres the customization?
one reason why 3D on PC is so much better is because it gives you a bevy of options to play with!
even the convergence, which sets the distance between the 2 images which increases the depth and pop out.
no ps3 game has that, god knows why!
only the PoP collection lets you set the distance away from the TV you are too.
if your 3Ms away from the TV, and the TV does not know that it hurts the effects.
you need to be able to play around with these settings so you can get it how you like.
3D to me just has not been implemented properly yet, none of the games feel like they were specifically built for 3D.
GG for example were so cocky with there 3D, but its the worst i have ever experienced!
i think 3Ds come premature, the kinks have not been worked out yet, the hardwares not there to support it properly, and the devs have not been trained properly with it yet either.
once they work out all those kinks then it will be here to stay, and should add that much more to the experience!
i just been so disappointed, because, well, i went into 3D gaming expecting what you get at the movies but you dont!
3D movies first off have no quality dip, 3D or 2D they look just as good as each other!
then theres the effects themselves, everytime something pops out of the screen it does not pop out 2cms like games do, it pops out right into your face!
i was expecting 3D gaming to be like 3D movies, but the truth is its not even half way!

So you’re saying there’s A LOT of work to do before this catches on…? Or better yet become something that’s worthwhile…wouldn’t disagree there..

    pretty much.
new things need to offer all positives and few negatives to catch on, if theres some positives and some negatives its never really going to become standard.
people have become graphics whores these days, 3D ruins that.
so you basically have to choose better graphics, or slight added depth.
ATM theres too many cons and not enough pros!

    Agreed fully.
