Sony’s PS3 and PSP didn’t realize any growth over last year, however both consoles enjoyed significant gains in the software department. And on the global install base front, PS3′s set to overtake the Xbox 360.
For the three months ending December 31st, PlayStation 3 sold 6.3 million units, down by 0.2 million units from the same period last year. Sony didn’t take it too hard, however, as the giant’s already met its sales estimates for the aforesaid year.
As for global PS3 sales, the number, according to SCEI, now stands at 47.9 million units sold, while Xbox 360 stands at 50 million units sold worldwide.
On the PSP front, Sony sold 3.6 million units in its third quarter, a drop of 0.6 million year-over-year. PlayStation 2 sales were unchanged from 2010, standing at 2.1 million units sold.
On the Software side of things, however, Sony saw an incredible rise of almost 50 percent, a realization it must be happy with. Sony sold 57.6 million PS3 games in its third quarter, compared to 29.3 million in the former period.
PSP sales rose significantly, too, with 16.1 million units sold, compared to 15 million in the same quarter of 2009. That rise was an important indicator, as in its Q2 earnings report, the handheld saw software sales drop from 13 million to 11 million.
PS2′s over ten years now, but it’s still able to sell. Yet, the console’s dying, and Sony’s latest earnings report proves the point. There was a sharp drop in PS2 software sales, down from 11.2 million in 2009 to 5.3 million this year.
Overall, it’s been good news for the hardware giant, as its Networked Products and Services division, which houses both the company’s PlayStation and VAIO business, has extended Q3 profit from ¥19.5 billion to ¥45.7 billion year-on-year, the firm announced today.

nice!
now only if they learned how to advertise and treat their fans properly they would see a even bigger increase!
imagine if sony treated the whole world how they treated the US, they would of overtaken the 360 by now!
Maybe. I don’t think that attitude is on purpose though.
They need to dominate the EMEAA regions to achieve that feat. It’s feasible though.
