Long Single Player Games Without Online Component Are “Finished” Says EA

Oh yeah? So what’s your response to the success of God of War III, Mr. Gibeau? Your theory is on point, but there are yet titles that will be able to buck the trend, sell excellent, give gamers a darn great experience, all while doing it without a multiplayer component.

But for the most part, Frank Gibeau, president of the EA Games label is right.

He made his stance known while speaking to Develop recently, adding “…it’s not only about multiplayer, it’s about being connected.”

“I firmly believe that the way the products we have are going they, need to be connected online. Multiplayer is one form of that.

“I volunteer you to speak to EA’s studio heads; they’ll tell you the same thing. They’re very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you’re out. I think that model is finished,” he continued. “Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at.”

He is right for the most part, but I expect great games without online to continue to flourish for a time.

    Eventually they’ll die out.
